Any tips to share on how to take out and replace the main wire harness under dash on a 71 Demon? Thanks in advance.

I changed out a complete dash harness on a 70 Coronet R/T. I found a nice uncut one at a salvage yard. I took a tablet to draw a diagram and pulled the instrument cluster loose so I could see behind it. You may have to unplug the speedometer. I drew a little diagram on the tablet of what colors plugged in where and shapes of the plug ends. I took out the entire harness without any damage. When I put it in my car, I again took a tablet and drew a little pic of my cluster and what plugged in where. It was very easy putting the replacement harness back in my car. I planned on doing the same thing with the dash harness on my 69 Dart GTS. I have a couple of complete harnesses. My Dart has A/C and that would be the only thing to keep in mind. Non A/C and A/C harnesses are slightly different.

I've done a variety of harness in Mopars over the years, I'm thinking that a lot of the later under dash and engine harnesses, 1965 on, had the AC wires in them and they where not connected, maybe it depends on which facttory, brand and year OP, try and find a factory service manual for your car, maybe Google the net for the factory under the dash wiring diagram, it shows all the colors and connections Be very caeful on the black wires with no tracers, there are two of them in the 1971 Dusters and one is a ground and the other one is not If my memory is serving me correctly, I put my Duster back together in 2004 and 2005. There is a difference between the standard instrument clusters and the Rallye clusters and the wiring harnesses, nothing that can't be worked around though

pull the seats out, pull the steering column out, pull the heat/ac box and get a good light. Make sure you print out a COLOR copy of the diagram. I think they might have one here in the tech archives. And don't rush it.

take many notes/pics when undoing the old harness. If making it up a new one set the old one on your kitchen floor spread out and unwrap the electrical tape carefully maintaining the harness' shape/position. Make a new identical harness next to it & as you add 1 wire to start the new one make a wire on the old harness dissappear till the old one shrinks to nothing and the new one takes shape that way you have a carbon copy. Use identical color coded wires 1 gauge size (ie 14 instead of 16) larger than original. NAPA has brass male/female 1/4" terminals 725147/725145. invest in a quality wire stripper/crimper, one that grabs the wire then pulls the insulation sideways you'll not regret the price
