Starter doesn't always engage... - 02/21/12 04:17 AM
Brand new Jegs starter on my big block doesn't always engage. I have a thin shim on it and hope this is this is the problem but am not real confident. Anyone else have any experience with these starters?

Both are bolts...it is shimmed a bit. If I hit the starter 6 times onetime it will spin and/or just nick the flywheel a bit. Am thinking I'll remove the shim, but don't think it will do any good. Don't know why it'll do it intermittently?

Is this an OEM clutch housing or TorqueFlite? A lot of the aftermarket scattershields don't properly pilot the starter nose, causing this. You can "wiggle" the starter outboard a bit to make it work, but a non-piloted starter is long-term trouble.
There is NO shim on a Mopar. That's a seal.

Never mind I reread your post and it makes sense to me now...so you think it's too close to the block, correct?
