I NEED A BRAKE!!!!!

I NEED A BRAKE!!!!! - 02/18/12 07:14 PM

A few years ago upon completion of my 70 Coronet I decided to put aftermarket front disc brakes on it. I still have drum brakes on the rear. After installing the front disc brakes, the car is nearly impossible to stop! I have bled and re-bled the brake lines several times. So it must be something else! Included with the disc brake kit was an inline increase/decrease valve, in which I have no clue where it goes, as there were no instructions as to installing it. Do I need to install it? My car did not come with power brakes, and I have not tried installing a brake booster yet. Can anyone please tell me where this increase/decrease valve goes? Thanks for any and all replies!

What Kit?, What master cylinder?, What proportioning valve?, or Distribution valve?, What Calipers?, What did you bleed first?, second?, last?, etc....otherwise everything is a guess on everyone's behalf............................

That valve is a proporting valve, google it so you understand what it is, where it goes and why you need it It goes in the brake line to the rear end , mount it where you can reach it easily so you can adjust it to increase or decrease the amount of brake pressure to the rear end. Ideally you want both both sets of brakes, front and rear, to lock up at the same time. You use that valve to limit the amount of fluid to the rear brakes and adjust it as needed, trial and error method.BTW, you may need to change your master cylinder also, contact the brake maker that you bought the kit from and ask them what size master cylinder bore do they recommend for your car and brake kit

That is your brake proportioning valve and you absolutely need to install that inline between the master cylinder and the brakes. It's used to equalize the pressure of the brake fluid so the front and rear brakes sync when stopping. Once installed, you'll bleed the system, then adjust the valve incrementally until the front brakes lock just before the rear brakes do.

Thanks for the replies! I believe the disc brake kit was from the INLINE TUBE COMPANY. I got the kit around 2000 or 2001. I can not find the papers that came with the kit. They did include with the front disc brake kit a master cylinder that would be a match for my needs. I used the original proportioning valve that was on my car, which had drum brakes front and rear. Were proportioning valves different for rear drum, front disc brake applications than for drums front and rear? If so, where can I get the correct one? Thanks again for the replies so far!

The "valve" you have now in your car is just a distribution block for a drum/drum application, not a proper proportioning valve for a disc/drum application, you can either splice in the proportioning valve supplied into the rear brake line to reduce the pressure applied to the rear, or install a factory proportioning valve, the choice is yours,....would be nice to see a pic of the master supplied?,..

Thanks for your replies! I will try to get a pic of the master cylinder on here tomorrow. I assume that I was sent the proper master cylinder as I ordered it through Duetschman Automotive and told him what application I was going to use. That being disc on the front and drum on the rear.

This is the granddaddy that all this stuff is based upon...you'd do well to read and digest it thoroughly...
