Cleaning a plastic fan shroud

Cleaning a plastic fan shroud - 02/13/12 07:39 PM

I recently picked up an original plastic fan shroud for my car. It is in great shape but needs a good cleaning. I tried washing it and scrubbing it with a brush but the dirt on it is like baked on. Does anyone know what I could use to clean the dirt off without damaging the surface of the shroud?

Chrome Wheel cleaner.... It's an acid formula & will loosen all sorts of stuff... Since acid is stored in a plastic bottle it obviously doesn't effect plastic...

Not all plastics are the same, "plastic" is a very broad category. Best to not assume that the storage bottle is the same material in the shroud. The bottle has different requirements for its job than a shroud.

Try Simple Green first. Amd then maybe a pressure washer.

I've used wax & grease remover and Simple Green, then some Armor-All. I prefer to not paint them, but I can understand that sometimes there's no other way to make them nice.

I blasted the plactic stuff that comes on challengers with a pressure washer. It did a great job for me and I did't do anything to them afterwards except spray WD 40 on them.
They still look good today.

Simple Green and a pressure washer has worked well for me on plastic chassis parts like the shroud. On somewhat nasty under car parts like rail mounted splash shields I have used a light coat of Krylon semi flat black which seems to hold up well. I wouldn't do that on a shroud as it might just flake and look crummy... if needed I'd use the 3 step SEM plastic paint process (cleaner, adhesive promoting primer wash, black finish coat).

I gave mine a good cleaning with Simple Green and then shot it with a Krylon Fusion (for plastics) spray bomb. Surprised how good it looks--maybe a little glossier than stock. No flaking.

Foaming tire cleaner (No Touch),brush, rinse, dry then your favorite protectant. The original on my '75 looks like new.
