Intake for a TQ

Intake for a TQ - 02/12/12 02:49 PM

A guy at work is rebuilding his 340 motor and is trying to decide on what type of intake he can use with a TQ he has had rebuilt. He has Edelbrock performer aluminium heads. Can he use a stock intake with these heads or would the edelbrock performer intake be better?
If the stock intake is better, is there a better year intake to use?
thanks,

The Performer intake would be a little better than stock. A Performer RPM would be much better but I don't know if it will have room for the big TQ secondaries to open.

Air gap or LD340

a performer intake is = to any early/mid 80s cast iron stock sperdbore intake only lighter. (there are stock sqaurebore intakes for 340/SB also)

a holley street or strip dominator intake works well and has the spredbore carb flange. work rather well for a single plan low rise intake on the street.

they LD340 and LD4B are right in the #s as the newer airgap rpm intakes,i have used a squarebore to spredbore open adaptor many times on the street with good results, not the best combo but works for street duty on these squarebore intakes.

those intakes can be hogged out to fit a spedbore intake also.

IMHO, any stock cast iron intake will fit the bill and do rather well for performance, the LD and rpm are the big step up in performance for the SB.

edelbrock made the rpm/airgap to match those alum heads and would be the best overall intake to run with them IMO.

I would even run the edelbrock cam thats matched for those heads and airgap intake for the complete power package.

I don't think the Performer intake is any better than the factory iron piece. It's lighter though. The factory iron intake is actually better than a lot of aluminum intakes truth be known. The LD340 is a good choice and with light clearancing the TQ can bolt right on.

Sheldon I agree, factory small block intakes are REALLY heavy! I'm pretty sure they are even heavier than an iron big block intake! That being said they are an excellent design and perform well.

The Performer is nearly identical to the factory intake. It works just as well and weights less. That's why I suggested it. No hogging out of the secondaries or other silliness. Just bolt it on and go. It's TQ approved.

Right on Feets! I guess the weirdo in me just likes the idea of an iron intake with aluminum heads, it would be great for confusing the competition.
One of the fastest street cars I owned was a 69 Formula S with a solid lifter 340 that I shifted at 7500-8000, I ran a stock iron intake with 750 Holley. Won lots of contests and ticked a lot of people off when I opened the hood afterwards.

Arent the Performers 318 port size ? That would make them flow less then the stock iron intake.

LD340 would be my first choice. Action Plus #2. The LD4B is 318 sized and can not be opened up for the TQ.

M1 Single plane and Holley Street Dominator will work as well.

My son is running a street dominator on his 318. I think we should take it to the recyler's myself, It is not an improvement over stock.

I say .... a Strip Dominator.

I like LD340's, they look close to stock and perform VERY well, but they have been passed up performance wise in recent years. If going for the most improvment, added HP/less weight over stock with a mild to moderate street build it's pretty hard to beat an Air Gap.

Re: Intake for a TQ - 02/12/12 07:17 PM

lots of bad info flowing today

The performer makes about 10hp more than the stock spreadbore intake on mildly modified engines, port size is slightly smaller but the port shape is much better and translates into a little more HP at every RPM. The LD340 is definately a step up, the LD4B has slightly smaller port exits than the LD340 while the ports them self are pretty much the same except mirror image and no where to mount coil. They can BOTH easily be modified to fit a t-quad with no adapter. The performer RPM will make more power every where in the RPM range than the LD340 (seen it on a dyno myself) not a huge differance but it is defniately there. The air-gap is the same exact runners/plenum as the regular RPM but it has a dropped floor to keep it cooler. They made the same power on the dyno, possibly in the car with air flowing under there it would keep it a little cooler and make a little more HP and possibly a little detonation resistance from the cooler charge. The weiand action plus was right there with the LD340. The RPM or RPM air-gap need an adapter or some welding to mount a t-quad, just not enough meat to grind away and get it to seal the base of the carb, when I run them I bolt the adapter on and blend the transition so it is more like a manifold desighned for the t-quad.

The only one that made equal power to the stocker was the street master, cool looking intake and may get better mpg but NOT a performance bolt on. I do see lots of room for improvement with a little grinding in it, especially the plenum (or the area where the plenum should be.

We also tested an M1 single plane and picked up power over 6000 and lost a little every RPM below that VS the RPM witch was easily the best dual plane.

Left over intakes are in the for sale section.

Engine was a stockish 360 with heads milled .030 mopar thing gaskets and comp 280 magnum cam cheapy headers 800 cfm t-quad.

Did not have a street dominator on hand but on my old 66 dart drag car ran the same ET MPH as the stock 77 360 4bbl intake.

Weiand 8007 needs no adapter for an thermoflush.

In a dyno test Dulcich wrote about, the Performer was stronger on the low end and weaker on the upper end than the OEM intake. As he mentions, a port match may improve it. At the point of the test when the intakes were swapped, the engine still had a stock cam. Yep, the stock intakes are heavy. About 45 lbs i think. A 440 intake is a few pounds lighter. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/mopp_0105_dyno_test_360_smog_motor/viewall.html

Yes the mid '70s EGR 360 TQ intake is a really nice piece but it is heavy. I'm using one myself. I'm with the Perf RPM as the intake to have if it will fit under your hood.

I use a RPM airgap and an adapter to the TQ.
Works great, I just love a well tuned TQ.

The guy at work and I were talking today at lunch about his options using a TQ on a LD340 or Airgap intake etc.He is wondering how you get around the choke setup on the TQ if there are no provisions on the intake for a choke like on a stock manifold.
Any answers or suggestions?

I removed mine, I only run it in warm weather. I just pump it several times when cold, let off the throttle and it starts every time. Once it's warmed up it's good for the day.
