Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/09/12 05:58 AM

Hi. Am finding out how much fun it's NOT to locate a single prong neutral safety switch for 65-68 727 torqueflite. Fleabay has them for 47 bucks with 11 bucks for shipping. Anyone know where to find one a little bit cheaper? I've checked the usual places like YO, Mancini Racing, Dixie Restoration, Dante's Mopar, Herbs parts. Everybody seems to have an abundance of the three prong NSS. Thanks, Joe

Have you checked with the local parts houses? Some things are around. you just gotta know how to look em up, as they won't be in the computer, have the counter person look into some actual books. Also Rock Auto is a good resource for older stuff. might wanna call a couple transmission shops local and see what they have to say.
I wouldn't think you should have too much trouble finding them at a decent price. The places you mention are, for the most part "Race" orientated.

OK just checked Rock auto and they show the 3 prong for 68 (?) and nothing for older cars. It is only $9.oo and change. I guess the one prong is not so available as I would have thought. I think you can use the 3 prong and just use the correct prong. I don't know wich one but others will.

You cannot replace a single prong NSS with a three prong. look in the tech archives for correct info.

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 12:01 AM

Thanks stumpy. I knew folks more informed than myself would chime in. Just seemed that the one wire for the neutral safty switch was all that needed to be attached. Might I ask why it will not work? Rooster comb? And where can the O.P. and anyone else, get a new one? I have several old ones but as I use those trannies I might find I need one or two myself. Worse comes to worse I will just bypass it, but my luck I would forget and start it in gear or something dumb like that.

Wow that's pricey, thanks Joesixpack.
Stumpy, I will be going through the archives. I usually have a hard time finding stuff there, but guess now is a good a time as any to learn navigation.

The 2 outter pins are for the back up lights and the center pin is for the safety switch.
HMMM doesn't say it can't be used. Just wich is wich. See I still don't get it. Why can't a person just use the center prong?

is yours bad? or just needing one?

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 03:02 AM

Yes its bad and its leaking as well. Last time I bought one of these, I just went to the auto parts store and they had one behind the counter.................I guess that was 20 years ago. My, how times have changed. I can get the three prong from everywhere and cheap. The one prongs, I can only find on ebay for around 45 bucks. I will hit the transmission shops and see if they have any shelved. If so, I will buy a couple.

I guess if worse comes to worse, I can buy the wiring harness for the three prong, put in a three prong and cut off the two outside wires as I won't be using them. Joe

Look at the rooster combs and the switchs that go together and it will be plain to see why they won't interchange. It has to do with the area that hits the switch button amd the legth of the switch as well as how they ground.

I'm confused..............what are you referring to as the rooster comb????

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 04:37 AM

Look at the picture of the three levers (rooster combs) and the switchs below each one. You can see that there are two legs that work the first switch ,a notch and a leg for the second switch and a ramp for the third three prong style. You can see that they will not work if switched around. The switchs screw into the trans at different depths also. They won't work unless they are matched sets lever and switch.

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 04:49 AM

So I just can't substitute the one prong for the three pin NSS and add the neutral switch connector plug in and not utilize the two outer wires??? But if this tranny was being placed into a 69 or 70 Mopar, wouldn't the three pin NSS be used instead of the one prong?? This is what's confusing me???

I did a search of the tech archives and the only thread it would bring up for "neutral safety switch" was this one.
https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...rue#Post6589590

It doesn't give any info about the single pole style switches, just info on how the 3 pole switch works.

I agree the comb in the trans has to be changed to use a 3 prong. Its what shifts the trans gears and 3 prongs are different. The 3 will thread in but wont work as the comb wont contact it.Bite the bullet and buy the right switch.Rocky

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 12:40 PM

After my last experience with NSSs I just pull an OE one from a junk yard transmission.

When I was building my 76 Dodge truck I needed to have all the lights working to get it thru the level 3 inspection at DMV. It had a bad NSS/backup light switch so I went into town and picked up a Bosch switch from the local parts store. The made in China POS lasted one time thru the gears and died. I was a little Poed to say the least and pulled the switch from a used transmission I had laying around and got the truck thru inspection. When I rebuilt the truck I bought a TCI transmission which came with a new switch installed.....this one was made in India. I’ll admit it was a little better switch....it lasted a week. The 35 year old switch from the used transmission is has been in the truck for 5 years now and is still going.

The rooster comb is simply the name for the trigger for the switch.

You contardict yourself with this last statement. You said it can't be done, and then explain how they can. Hmmm.

Here is the picture that is in the tech archive article.

Although they look different. it appears as though any could be used. The last comb seems to have a high spot where the middle one has a valley, that high spot would be for the back-up lights. After the neutral both combs ramp down to release the switch. For the sake of not having to do it twice I might just replce the rooster comb as well. Here is the picture that is in the tech archive article.

The first one was for pusg button trans the second one is the 66 thru 68 switch and the last one is the 69 & later switch

early switch, Arrow points to the contact area. The high points on the comb contact in park and neutral to ground the switch and allow the car to start.

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 02/10/12 03:57 PM

Later switch. The later comb has an extra contact point to turn on the back up lights. So yeah now you can see the rooster comb would need to be replaced as well, as the extra point for reverse is between the park and neutral. Basically this comb is longer and has an extra tab. Just swap both and eliminate the back-up light wires from the system. I suppose the valvebody might need to be switched as well(?)
When the weather gets warmer, I will pull both apart and see just what needs to be done.
Still, never say can't , say how .
Of course the $45.oo dollar price isn't looking as bad. Might get a couple of those myself. Don't see 'em getting any cheaper.

If you are putting it into the later body style then yes the three prong plug needs to be used. If you are useing an older tranny this would need to be changed anyway or you would not have back up lights.
Pretty much renders the rest of my posts moot huh? At least you learned what a rooster comb is. I learned a little too. That's why I come here. I am always running off and doing things that can't be done.

I Did not conterdict myself.I was addressing the fact you can't swap styles of switchs without swapping levers. Which was for the benefit of the original poster from whom you highjacked this thread.

Hello,

Can anyone tell me where I can get the "comb" for the 3 prong NSS for the A727 transmission, and what is it really called?
I have a '94 B250 van with backup light issues, and that may be the problem.

I have searched all over and was fortunate to find this thread.

Thanks.

The factory name for the roostercomb or cockscomb is "Lever, Manual Valve".

What is the issue with the BU lights? If they stay on in every gear, the plastic shoe is broken/missing...can't think of any other issue that would be the roostercomb's fault.

dont have any of the combs, try CRT for internal loose trans parts...

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 04/02/14 12:43 AM

I used a 68 Charger 727 when I built my 70 Satellite. I had everything completed mechanically and working. After paint I started to assemble everything. When I hooked up the back-up lights I checked them with the key on in reverse and they worked. Little did I know they were on in d-2-1 also. So what everyone is saying is that since the 68 trans had a rooster comb for a single NSS when I installed the 3 prong NSS I would have had to change the rooster comb to make everything correct?

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 04/02/14 07:40 AM

Thanks for all the info, guys.
The problem is that I have to jiggle the gear shift while in reverse to find the "sweet" spot that illuminates the BUL's. I've already replaced the NSS twice, so this is about the only thing left. I found out this morning that the part is called a "detent lever" and you can buy a "neutral safety switch detent insulator" kit to replace the insulator. This is about the only thing left, other than a bent or out-of-alignment lever, itself. One other thing that has crossed my mind is maybe the NSS is too long,or installed too tight in the socket. I have temporarily wired a 12v micro-buzzer in the reverse light circuit so I can tell when the BUL's are on. Not really a big thing to me, but the people at the state inspection office would think differently. LOL

Thanks again,
Ken

Re: Neutral safety switch--------------Where to find one??? - 04/02/14 07:49 PM

Having to jiggle the linkage might be because one of the plastic bushings in the linkage is worn or has fallen out, lay under the car while somebody manipulates the linkage and look for lost motion in the linkage.

Also, it's not uncommon for the shaft in the "detent lever" to come loose and result in lost motion; check for this by disconnecting the linkage from the shift lever and operating the lever by hand...there should be no lost motion between the clicks.
