What do you use as a sealant for fuel fittings?

What do you use as a sealant for fuel fittings? - 10/18/08 11:31 PM

I am not sure what to use on the threaded fittings for my electric fuel pump and fuel regulator to help seal the threads. Any help or experience would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone, Russ:)

Thanks James. Will the stuff at regular hardware stores resist the gasoline ok? I have regular water pipe sealant and tape...will this work?

Tape is probably not a good idea, unless you want to find little pieces of it in your carb...

Been using tape for years, never have I had that problem! If you use the tape properly you will have no problems.

Shouldn't need any sealer tape or anything else for flare fittings. All the nut does is hold the flare together shouldn't be anything there to leak.

I am using compression fittings. There are pipe threads that the fittings screw into and I am concerned that they may leak. I really want to do it right the first time. Thanks so much for the input so far. Still don't feel warm and fuzzy yet about the type of sealer to use.

Any more thoughts....?

Teflon plumbers tape. I"ve used it for a long time with no carb trouble. Just be sparing with it.

As long as you don't have any tape hanging off the end, it will be contained in the threads. Just gotta be careful. Like using rtv on gaskets. If your careful and not get sloppy. It's usually not an issue.

Funny you should mention the rtv. I have been known to dab a bit to much on my pieces. We had the 440 put together and ready to start. No oil on the dip stick. I was sure I had put the right amount of oil in. Added another quart...no oil on the stick. Again, another quart of oil added...no oil on the stick.

Can you guess where I'm heading with this? I had so much rtv on the pan gaskets (with windage tray) that it covered the hole for the dip stick and was wiping the oil from the stick every time I took it out. Needless to say I had to drain several quarts of oil out once we realized what had happened.

I am very careful now.

NPT (pipe threads) need teflon tape or the white pipe thread sealant. flare fittings seal at the flare as mentioned & dont need anything though I've added a shot of WD40 to the threads if I think I'm going to have to open it up again but it's not neccesary.

Thanks Robert! You have confirmed my concerns and I plan on trying the tape since I already have some. I will be careful. The WD40 sounds like a good idea as sometimes the threads on the fittings seem to bind a bit once you get down to the last little bit of tightening.

Thanks again!

as mentioned start it a hair back from the end & when you cut your piece you have a slight bit of overlap & wrap it in the direction so that when tightening it wants to pull the tape tighter rather than loosening it & with your thumb run it deep into the threads.

Many people take pride in proper wrapping of teflon tape. The difference between tape and paste is you do not have to be an expert at it and chances of tape landing in the needle and seat are zero with paste. Even if you perfectly wrap it, someday it needs to come apart too.

LocTite 592 is the best stuff made for pipe threads.

No sealant for flared fittings.

the flare does the sealing but I clean the aluminum threads with brake clean then a light dab of 30 wt eng oil because the alum threads are delicate.

Go to the local farmers supply or any fuel distribution{portable tanks} supply and get the correct tape...There's a thread tape made for fuel lines...Comes on a roll like teflon tape but this stuff is yellow...We use that tape on all our company trucks that have the bed tanks...

I use a light dab anti-seize compound on the threads.
