how to wire the starter from 1 post to 2 post - 02/01/12 10:52 PM

Here is my situation. I am putting a 383/727 into my 1956 plymouth. It previously had a 361 in it with a powerflite transmission. The old starter was only 1 terminal up to the solenoid on the fenderwell and worked fine. I now have a mini starter in it with the 383/727 combo. The big wire is still there but it won't crank. I assume it is because I need to wire the usual small wire that comes from the starter as well. What exactly does that wire do and where can I put it. I am just afraid of frying the electrical system if I do it wrong. Thanks for any help.

I would think you would 1)wire the big terminal of the starter directly to the battery 2) hook the small wire that controled the original solenoid to the small terminal on the starter 3) disconnect and remove the original solenoid.

As a test, before you do any of the above, put a test light on the small wire to the original solenoid. When the key is moved to start (or start button pressed) the light should light up. When the key or start button is released the light should go out. After you verify you have the correct start wire, have at it.

PS... a pic of your current setup, especially the old solenoid, would help.

wire a B+ wire to the large stud on the starter coming from the B+ post on the battery.
Wire in a momentary contact switch to the smaller connector on the starter and to a B+ source and your good

If you want to retain the original firewall solenoid and its wiring, just put an 18 ga jumper wire between the large and small terminals on the starter.

the starter won't engage until the solenoid pushes the drive into the ring gear.

thank you john. I did want to keep my original wiring and firewall solenoid. I figured I was going to have to run a seperate wire to the solenoid just wasn't sure which one. jumper wire it is. Thanks!

hello,
if you jump large term to small starter will stay engaged all the time. large wire should be battery hot.

small wire should go to starter relay (hot with key in crank position)

Not if the large terminal is powered by a solenoid like in the subject car.

John Kunkel, I by no means fell off the turnip wagon yesterday when it comes to old Mopars but I wish I knew as much as you're after forgetting .

Thats just what I did. Since my battery is in the trunk I did not want the battery cable to my starter hot all the time. So I mounted a Ford type solenoid in the trunk and just wired the old wire from the starter relay that went to the solenoid to the solenoid in the trunk. Now the wire to the starter is only hot while cranking. I also wired an 8 gauge wire from the battery to the starter relay where the car picks up its hot feed and this wire has a fuseable link on it right at the battery to protect the cars wire harness. It works great since the starter only engauges when the starter battery cable is hot and the small wire from the starter stud pulls the starter solenoid in also with the jumper only when the starter cable is hot. So simple and works so easy. Ron

Ok here's an update. I did the jumper between the small and big posts on the starter. I went to turn over the engine. The starter did spin, but did not engage the engine. After turning it for a couple seconds, the positive post on the battery started smoking and the positive cable was very warm. Any ideas?
