Solid roller Lifters..How Long before rebuild?

Solid roller Lifters..How Long before rebuild? - 01/31/12 06:47 PM

I have a Extreme Energy Street roller cam in My street hemi. I have less than 1200 miles on since engine rebuilt 3 yrs ago, some street and track time. Change the oil twice a summer (short summers up here in Maine lol!) I roll the engine over every 2 weeks in the winter.

When should I send the lifters to get rebuilt?

I'd just replace them next time you rebuild the engine. They surely don't any attention after 1200 miles. Might want to adjust the valves, but the roller lifters are fine for a long time.

I know the chevy guys are proud to get 1500-3000 miles on thiers. But they use the little wheels and finally have the lifter bores opened up to Mopar sizes.

What spring pressure and what lifter? With the mild ramps on that cam, the likely relatively low spring pressures, possibly never with a high quality lifter.

One of the writers for popular hotroding magazine got 12000 miles out of his comp solid roller lifters before they went south, he also never checked the lash. He admited he did not know how.
And that was in a SB chevy.

Also depends on the type of driving you do. If there's a lot of low rpm stuff, a more strict schedule is in order due to the lack of oil flying around to help lubricate things. If you have pressure fed axles on the lifters, disregard what I just wrote.

Great looking car you got there.

I pull them out every so often, clean them up in solvent and spend some time time checking them for "sticky wheels" or bearings that feel funny. Usually when a bearing gets damaged, one of the rollers will get a flat spot on it that you can feel just by rolling the wheel in the palm of your hand. If nothing found, oil them up again and reinstall.

Yours might be fine, but it might be nice to have a look.

It's either do that, or the other approach: keep an eye on the valve lash, and pay attention to the noise. If one ever gets noisy and opens up suddenly, don't run it any more...not at all....if you're on the road, call a rollback.

I'm overdue to check mine out and will probably do it this year.

Great info guys, so far I'm checking valve lash and keeping my ears open to any one lifter louder than the rest. I posted this as I didnt want to send them out for rebuild prematurely or have a catastrophic failure..Thanks for the kudo's my X..Zippy.

I've gone close to 8000mi on a set of Comp 928 lifters. This is a mild street roller with 190 on the seat and 450 over the nose. I finally chickened out a bought a set of Crane Ultra Pro lifters. I've pulled two of the Comps out (pretty tricky to do in a Hemi with intake on) and they look good. Once I pull the intake I'll look at the rest before swapping them.

I haven't looked at mine, but i believe they have approx 1300 miles on them. I just check the valve lash and so far everything seems to be ok.I only have a small cam with 254/284 @.050 duration. How's the green hemi running? I'll have to give you a call. Best regards.
