What's the secret to changing a SB oil filter w/headers

What's the secret to changing a SB oil filter w/headers - 01/18/12 02:52 AM

... and not making a huge mess!?!?!

I've had to change the oil filter a few times on my Road Runner, and despite my best efforts, every time I've finished the project with a bunch of degreaser and a garden hose.

I've got TTi headers and a short filter. No 90 degree adapter.

Just not enough room to work down there to put any sort of deflector, or to wrap the headers. I've tried just about everything short of installing a remote filter.

I've been a big block guy for a long time. I'm used to just trying to keep it off the K-frame. It's an easy clean-up.

wrap the header in aluminum foil, change filter, let mess drain, remove foil.

I've tried the foil before. Guess I need some heavier stuff because what I borrowed from the wife's kitchen would tear when I tried to wrap.

I use a filter with no anti drain back valve and remove the filter after sitting over night.

the filter does not spill oil that way.unless I tilt the filter to much anyways.

Sharpen a steel rod to use as a punch.. Punch a hole in the filter & drain it before you unscrew it.. I use a piece of a plastic bottle to direct the oil were I want it to go... Then as you unscrew the filter drop it directly into a ziplock bag...

I let the car sit for 24 hours and then remove the fiter. No oil drains from the attaching fitting on the block.

I used to have a Trans-dapt remote filter (dual filters) on my 360 powered truck. It just moved the oil mess from the block/headers to the fender where the filters were mounted.

I just loosen the filter, place a plastic bag over the filter and loosen it by hand from outside the bag, and let the residual oil fill inside the bag with the filter, after a few seconds it's drainded...easy

try it with a set of hot headers

cold is fine just takes a little longer to drain

I cut a hunk of cardboard big enough to make a "roof" over the part of the header to be dripped on and a drip pan. Oil drips on cardboard, flows to the pan, and stayes off header. Works great!

That's exactly what I do as well, jam the cardboard under the filter against the block. I wrap aluminum foil around the tubes 1st as a precaution.

I use a small (low profile) plastic bowl that sits on top of the header (below the oil filter) to catch the oil. Works great, no oil on the header pipes.

Yup, either catch the oil above the headers or cover the tubes and direct it. On my BB & Hemi motors, I use those cheap foil baking pans and bend them so they go a bit behind the filter and direct the oil to my drain pan.

On cold engine I place a oil catch mat on the headers to get the oil. I got some that soak up oil without the mess. Also a 90 degree will solve most of the mess
