Axles B Body

Axles B Body - 01/04/12 05:06 AM

I am building a stroker engine that should make 500hp and 550torque. I upgraded my posi unit with an auburn and a new 3:91 gear set. The car is only used for the street. Do I need to upgrade the original stock axles? They looked okay when I pulled them except for a small chip on one of the splines.

The stock axles will be fine if you aren't launching at 5000rpm with slicks.

The UPGRADED Auburn unit will smoke itself long before the stock axles give up ...

Well, I can tell you that with Moser Axles being as affordable as they are, why take the chance. They usually break at the step just up from the splines. I broke mine with a stock max wedge on drag radials, installed the Moser's and no more breakie breakie. I also installed them in my 70 Chally with a small block magnum crate. I say Moser or another alloy axle of your choice....

I think I'd change them to aftermarket just to be on the safe side.

When I last saw my Dentist for a chip in my tooth, he kinda grinned and said, "That's gonna be expensive....and time consuming too."

If I do decide to replace them. Which ones work with the stock drums and brakes? Moser, Strange, Mancini, Dr Dif? What length do I need for a 69 Roadrunner. Was the original ones 30 spline? My left side wheel studs are left hand nuts, I guess I will loose that.

I got mine from Doc. Good price and quick shipping. You upgraded the pumpkin right? If you go to the track at all it might be worth it. I plan on beating mine routinly so I upgraded.

Depends on your tires. Street tires won't hook that much power so you won't load the axles that much. with slicks or the sticky DOT race tires, the stronger axles may be a good upgrade.

I am running a bf radial ta 275/70r/15 in the rear, and the car will never see a drag radial or slick.

Mr.Yuck, Yes the pumpkin is the original 489 with an upgraded yoke with U-bolts, and a motive 3:91 gear with timken bearings.

Take the time now to replace the stock crush sleeve, if you haven't already, with a pinion spacer before you ruin the rear end

Did that too. Great piece. I also used the moroso billet caps instead of the U-bolts. Kinda a PITB but hey they are strong right???

Re: Axles B Body - 01/07/12 03:42 PM

I do agree upgrading the axles is a good idea. But with that said I still have the stock axles in my 63. I mostly drive the car on the street but I race it 2 or 3 times a year. I had a 500 hp 440 in it running mid 11's since 2006 and put my 600 hp 493 in this year and have made 7 passes so far running in the 10.70 area with no trouble. But I am lucky so far as I am asking for trouble if I dont upgrade my axles real soon. I will have to get a price from Dr diff. But if you are not racing and not putting sticky tires on it you can drive around on the stock axles. But as was said it wont hurt at all to upgrade the axles.

Do I need to remove the thrust washer from the posi unit?

Those billet caps suck , you run the potential of locking up the driveshaft if the rear goes to just the right angle , they are too tall , U bolts would be better .
