Why is my odometer running backwards???? - 01/04/12 03:14 AM

It's a 71 RR with the rally dash & is quite the hodge podge of parts from different cars. Anyhow, the speedo is inaccurate, but seems to be functioning in the right direction (faster when the car goes faster & visa versa). But I'm baffled about the odometer. I've got it apart now & it looks to me like it'll only go together one way.

Anybody else have this happen? I mean, it would be cool if the car were actually getting newer the more that I drive it, but you know....

Okay, looks like I just answered my own question when I compared the unit in my car to a spare I had lying around. Notice anything weird?

Looks to me like if both of these odometers are turned in the same direction, one will count up, the other will count down. Strange, huh?

I see it now , looks like someone did some swapping of parts if the helix of the shaft that spins the numbers is twisted in the same direction...

all of the numbers are different. one odometer counts up, one counts down.

the backwards one must be a chrysler australia model.

Now we know why some old cars have so few miles on them!

Seriously, that's weird; it's not like you can turn them upside down, so I'm guessing the odometer itself is from another application that spins opposite, or whatever drives the drum is backwards.

Maybe one of the speedos is from a car with cruise control? The extra cable needed with the cruise servo might spin the opposite of a car without cruise?

Nope.... The speedo is pieced together & one odometer came from a speedometer withe the odometer above the center of the speedometer & the other odometer came from a speedometer with the odometer below the centerline....

I was curious about this thread cuz we have a 93 T/A whose Odometer runs backwards when you drive at road rather than highway speed.

my sisters 69 cutlass the speedo counts up for a couple thousand miles and then starts counting backwards after it reaches a certain #.Its the weirdest thing i have ever seen.

Its obvious whats wrong . Somebody had it apart and installed all the numbers backwards.

Look at the gear at the right side of the pics. One contacts the gear at the bottom and one contacts the gear at the top.
