Vintage Front Runner Size????

Vintage Front Runner Size???? - 01/03/12 04:38 AM

What was the common size used for front runners back in the day? The height is the main thing I'm looking for. They look so tall and cool. Just not sure how tall of tire I can fit in the front opening of a 66 Coronet. I'm looking at these Pro Tracs from Coker but they're almost 28" tall.

Or maybe these http://store.cokertire.com/tire-brands/cars-trucks/firestone/640-15-firestone-blackwall.html

They look like the ones Bob Mosher uses on lots of his cars

7.10 & 7.60 are the 2 larger sizes I recall; 7.10 will fit Dusters & etc if the front/lower corner of the wheel openings are trimmed as mine were. IIRC, A B-body will take a 7.60, might need the same trimming. Here's my car with 7.10s back in the day.

Excellent, love the look of your Duster. Vintage race cars look awesome.

8.00x15 and 8.20x15 was the hot setup back then, you use the 7.60x15 only in a emergency 6.00x15,6.70x15 and 7.10x15 where for street cars and hot rods, not drag cars Edited for proper sizes due to CRS

Cab, those were Stahl & Moroso sizes; I still have a pair. Greg, the car will be returned to that livery in the next few years; I think everyone's seen current pics of it...

All the tire makers used those sizes before changing to the later, shorter and wider sizes. Firestone and Goodyear made lightweight two ply front tires in 1973 for drag racing when I started racing at NHRA races, not just Stahl and Moroso

Granted, I'm aware of the old tire sizing; I'm 60! I was just posting what I know. I wasn't aware of the GY & etc drag-racing fronts of the era except the Fuel cars & such. I interpreted the post as pertaining to vintage "door cars" like Stock & SS. I don't recall what was used before the Stahl & Moroso fronts, other than the VW Beetle size we used.

I believe that you will find that 7.75X14 were the standard tires @ 27.02" diameter. 8.25X14 were optional @ 27.58" diameter. 6.70X15 measure 27.5" so I assume that they will fit just fine, especially when you consider that they are narrower.

Yeah I am thinking more of the S/S and door cars. Just wasn't sure what size. I know if they are too small it looks funny but the front wheel well on a 66 or 67 b body is close at the front and I don't want to rub. Thanks for the input so far.

I like these, they have the same look as the Firestones on Coker Tire's site.

These look a little short for a B body to me.

I have those Coker Pro-Tracs on my car I needed some extra ground clearance for the big oil pan and the 28" tire was just the ticket.
