Removing Dust from Clear Coat

Removing Dust from Clear Coat - 10/13/08 10:56 PM

Hello,

I sprayed the inside of the decklid and hood this weekend in preparation for taking the car to the paint booth and getting it painted.

I did the engine compartment a few weeks ago and it turned out so great I thought I would save some time in the booth (I only have 1 day to paint the car in pieces) - so I decided to spray the inner panels so I would not have to "flip" anything in the booth...

It is a solid color (mopar lemon twist yellow) with no metalic.

I am using PPG DBC base (mixed 50/50 with reducer) and 2021 clear mixed per the directions.

I got some dust in the clear somewhere, now I want to know what I can do about it if anything???

I have a pic of the worst of the panels, what do you think?

I also painted the inside of the doors with black PPG DAR (single stage enamel), and got some dust in them as well. Can I buff this out as well - and if so how to start?

I am enclosing pics of both the dust, the hood (yellow) this is the worst of it most panels are better, the door (black) did not show up as well, but it has a similar dust...

Any suggestions?

Block wet sand with 1000 grit then move to 2000 grit. When you no longer see the dirt in the paint, you can buff. I like to use a little dish washing soap in the water to keep the paper from sticking.

Wetsand it until the dirt is gone and either buff it out or put on another coat of clear or two over top.

I know a guy who had an entire car painted and the paint gun developed a small leak on the last pass and dripped clear coat all over the top of the car. Looked awfull, but he was able to sand it down and reclear it and you can't tell anything happened now.

Sill open to suggestions... but I sanded it almost down to the basecoat and the dust must have been in the basecoat; I forgot to tack rag it before the clear ( ) so the dust is in the first coat, almost no hope. I am going to have to scuff and do it all again from scrach...

A whole day and $200 of materials down the tubes for some dust...

fun, fun, fun...

I might take up stamp collecting ...
