Power Steering hose o-rings

On power steering hoses I noticed that factory o-rings where they go into the sector and the pump are tapered. But mine are shot so I need to replace them. Can I use a standard round (non tapered) o-ring?

Is the taper just because they have been flattened or is it a sealing thing?

I believe they were round when new.
