So I’ve got my roll bar in and I’m looking to mount my harness. It’s a V-mount style harness that mounts to the backbrace at a single point. I can’t find anything in the rule book about what’s an acceptable mount type. It just says “securely mounted”. Do I have to weld a tab onto the backbrace, or is it acceptable to drill and bolt the mounting tab directly to the bar?

Either or. If you drill and use a through bolt in the bar, you need to weld a through tube in it for a reinforcement. Typically a piece of 5/8"-.058 CM will work for a 1/2' bolt or something similar for a 7/16".


If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I take the mounting tabs off the belts and wrap them around the Roll Bar tube (more surface area for the Belt to pull against) Additionally I don't believe "Y" belts are accepted by the IHRA or NHRA

"SFI 16.1 - Shoulder harness: A belt assembly, one strap for each shoulder, intended to restrain movement of the upper torso and shoulder regions. It includes adjustment and mounting hardware. Optional cross strap can be used to hold the shoulder harnesses together and if the cross strap is in front of the driver it must be capable of being released in a single motion. A Y-type shoulder harness, i.e. both shoulder straps become a single strap with one attachment point, is not permitted. (Effective January 1, 2005)"

These are ok. These are not considered Y type.

We used a tab like this on my car and another flat plate also for double shear protection.

That would be correct. The V belt is made with one length of material with a mounting tab attached in the middle and it can't come apart to be wrapped. I like the individual harnesses wrapped as well but he was asking about his V assembly.

If using a tab, make sure it is mounted in line with the direction of pull.

The wrap around kind work really well! They don't really slide around because of the slots in the seat. No fab necessary...

That's the way I've always done mine. And as previously mentioned, angle the sleeve so that the direction of pull is inline with the belts. I use grade 8 hardware, too. I don't know if it's a requirement, but I feel better about spending the extra $1.00.

To be legal, they want some type of a retainer on the bar to keep the belts from sliding out of position. Anything from a couple of muffler clamps to a nice welded D loop will suffice.
