My Barracuda 493 ci LD stroker 12.8 comp. SR MW heads ported by Dwayne Porter 337 @ .650, Wilson ported 400-3 intake, 1050 Dominator on E-85, custom 2 1/8" into 2" headers, 3.5" collectors. 8" convertor @ 5500 rpm, 3 peed torqueflite stock ratios. 4.3 gear. 2835 #s with me in it. 14x32 slicks.

Has run a best of 9.08 146mph.

Currently run a solid flat tappet cam .640 @ 276 dur.

Here's the questions; if I change to a roller what cam would you suggest?
Can I expect an improvement? How much?

Thanks, Don

Have you asked Dwayne what he thinks?

If your wanting to pick the ET and MPH up then a bigger drag race roller cam will do that but don't forget all the other parts that need to be change to make the cam work, valve springs, keepers, retainers, pushrods and possibly rocker arms work
As far as your motor where do you want it to make peak power at with the cam change?

Cab now it peaks at 6400, I don't want a rpm screamer. 6800 maybe?
Lifters will be a big question also.

I would look at a cam that has between 260 to 270 degrees @.050 with as much lobe lift that you can get on it and the look at 106 to 110 lobe (I like and use tighter LSA than most because it helps the bottom end with 440 size ports) separation angle and install it 2 to 5 degrees advance up
Are your rockers 1.5 or bigger ratio?
I ran a custom ground Comp Solid roller in my old Duster pump gas 518 C.I. stroker motor that had 260 @.050 on the intake and 266 @.050 on the exhaust, it was ground on a 108 LSA and I ran it at 106 or 107 on the intake lobes. It made peak HP with the low deck six pack at 5500 RPM and peak torque at 4500 RPM on several different engine dynos but the stupid car would run faster shifting at or above 7000 RPM confused
I change the 906 heads to a set of CNC ported Eddy RPM and then to a set of Indy SR M.W. ports and a 400-3 intake with a 1050 Dominator, that combination liked being shifted above 7000 RPM also with the same cam shruggy I did have a set Harland sharp 1.60 ratio rockers on it also thumbs

Do you know what your valve to piston clearance is now? Which rockers are you running? You'll most likely need to change springs, retainers, locks, pushrods, lifters and distributor drive so it gets expensive. Maybe $1500 or so for the conversion.

Depending on your rocker arms and installed height you should be able to put more lift in it, maybe 0.750 or so without beating up things too bad. If you want to move the RPM peak up a bit then you'll need to go a little bigger on the duration. Probably around 280 if you are running 276 now.

Crane has a 481 lobe that I use in my 514. That gives you about 0.700 lift with a 1.50 rocker and more if you have more ratio. Something like a 280/288 on 108 or 110 center installed 4 degrees advanced should get you moving. You should be able to make over 800 hp with that setup which will put you into the 8's at 155 mph or so. I assume you have a chute and all of the gear required to go 150 mph?

Andy I have HS 1.5 rockers. No chute, but am legal besides that. The car is good to 8.50, I am licensed to 7.50 (NHRA). You think it would pick up 9 mph? Was hoping my head porter would chime in....
Thanks for your input.

What brand and size front wheels do you have on your car in the signature picture?
Sorry, can't really help on the Cam. I had a Crower flat tappet cam 267/272 @ 50 and switched to a Bullet Roller of about the same size but 700 lift and it seemed to rev faster. But that could have been the increased spring pressures.
Did not get to compare at the track as my 833 tans has a junk 2nd gear in it and will not shift fast at all.

I don't think any "magic" is going to come from only a cam change(and associated hardware).

IMO, if you got a solid .10-.20 out of it, I'd think you did okay.

It's probably about a 20-30hp gain........ Maybe more if you were willing to run something that's a little harder on parts.

Call Ray....... See what he says.

Dwayne thanks for your reply. I will call both of you.

I don't want a "parts breaker"! Lately it's been easier to ask on here than to find time during business hours.

How late are you in the shop?

.10-.20 is all I'm looking for. I will have to ponder this, it might not be worth the $?

Ray said I have the biggest FT cam now.........

Speed costs money, how fast do I want to go? Is the question.
