Looking to build a small block pro charger motor. What block and heads would you use. 59 or 48 lifter bores. First time messing with a small block. Thanks

The hardest part is going to be able to find a block to get started with I would be looking for a tall deck 48 degree and there hard to find Not sure if the RItter block is straightened out yet with its troubles from the past

If you are looking to stay with a stock block, look for an E58 coded motor. They came in lots of HD optioned cars - late Magnums, 300's, Squads, Taxi's, some trucks. Magnum blocks would be another option. Don't know what HP you are shooting for - assume 700 max with a D1SC? Sonic testing the cyl. walls for sure. Girdle, forged rotating assembly for sure also. Rosary beads hanging from the rear view mirror - - - - . smile

if you are looking go Gen 3, its probly better way and more cost effective. just my two cents. Plus they have kits all over the place to procharge or blower style.

Thank you

good luck finding an r3 tall deck short deck r3 s seem more plentiful used but tough to squeeze a decent ring pack in a short piston to handle a power adder.ritter blocks have come a long way since their introduction,i would go thru ryan Johnson because he is familiar with what needs done to those blocks.he wont have you buying parts you don't really need.really good guy and extremely fair price wise.

How big are you wanting to do? That is going to determine the deck height you can go with. R3 blocks are around, but it can be slim pickings.
Gen III or R5/P7 ,may be a better option.

I have a tall deck R1 48' that I'm selling. I'd make someone a good deal on it. I have new cam bearings as well. It's 4.030 bore and 4 bolt mains. Pm me if anyone is interested

How much power do you want to make? I ran a 59 degree r3 block with Indy 360-1 heads, 9:1 compression, and 408 cubes. Makes around 1300 at the flywheel.

Just remember that the 59 degree blocks are not very roller cam friendly beacuse of the pushrod angle's... too much monkey motion. Offset valves/and rockers help quite a bit.

You should seriously consider the Gen 3 Hemi instead of a small block. Unfortunately the Small Block is pretty much in extinction with lack of parts. Rob Goss's Challenger is the benchmark for a procharged Gen 3. Good aftermarket Blocks an Heads readily available.

Not all roller lifters will work but there is some that work just fine. I have about 2000-2500 miles on a solid roller W2 headed 59* R1 block. I am using some mopar performance/crane roller lifters that clear the R1, comp also makes a lifter with the link bar moved that would work with the 59* R blocks. I think the comp lifter is an 8043-16 but not positive.

Going with a G3 would not be a bad idea though.

My roller lifters have been just fine? You don't need a radical cam with boost, mines very mild, it'll idle at 900 rpm pretty easily

any idea what rob goss has invested in time and money on developing his gen 3 program,he was going thru factory blocks at about 4 to 6 passes apiece.he has since gone to his billet blockwhich I'm sure is not a bargain piece lol.the builder probably doesn't need to make the power rob is making so I understand a production block may work for him.im old school and if you want efi and the whole works gen 3 is ok I guess but blow thru distributor engine I would still stay smallblock

Yes I don't think the original poster is will be making anywhere near the power or using anywhere near the boost that Rob does.

While I will continue to build "old stuff" using LA R blocks. If I did not have any of it I would not waste any time going to a Gen III hemi.

Rob Goss is running a solid cast block with Billet heads. The same block is available with water jackets. They certainly broke a lot of parts working out what worked or not.

There are many options here really, a 9.2" or 9.6" deck R3 with a W series head

A Ritter or EEI block with P7 heads

A Gen III Hemi, factory block and heads will get it done. You can can spring for a pair of Thitek heads and Aluminium block from BES
