If I retard between 10-20 degrees of timing when using Nitrous on My 572 RB( 2 stages) will I HAVE TO Phase my Rotor to avoid problems? Is anyone doing this without phasing the rotor without any problems?
I know that MSD makes a special Distributor cap and adjustable Rotor for my MSD distributor but it is supposed to be a much larger cap and I am worried that it may not fit without hitting my valvecovers!
Thanks Mike

I won't try it with out phasing, 20* is a lot to take out. The larger cap is nice but not mandatory. I run the msd small cap on mine and phase it half way between nos and motor.

You need a crank trigger. Chrysler dist is too small most you can take is about 10 degrees safely. How big are the kits? and what box do you have?

One day I will have something cool here.

I plan on using 200 in the first stage and 250 in the second stage.
I have a MSD pro billet Billet distributor,MSD Digital 7 plus ignition control box and MSD digital retard control.
According to Speedtech I will need to retard 7.5 on the first stage and an additional 6.7 on the second stage.
Thanks Mike

I assume he has a crank trigger how can you phase a rotor with out one. I would phAse your rotor 7 degrees retarded and try that.

He has never said he has a trigger. I think he is asking will it go out of phase if he takes out alot of timing with just the Dist? Thats what I got out of it? Maybe I'm wrong?

I do not have a crank trigger. MSD does make a larger cap AND a Adjustable Rotor for the Pro Billet distributors that allows you to phase your rotor for timing retard during nitrous use. I ordered one today from Summit and it will be here tomorrow. I was just wondering at what point( how much retard) one has to worry about doing this and if the larger cap will fit a RB without any trouble.

67dartgt quote "I run the msd small cap on mine and phase it half way between nos and motor."
Is there an adjustable Rotor available for the small cap or is there another way of phasing a rotor other than the adjustable one ???
Thanks Mike

I would be more concerned about hurting the motor constantly with that much nitrous and the timing not staying steady with just a distributor. Your spending money on the wrong parts.

I would think with the high dollar parts inside you would spend a little money on the outside.

Are you guy's saying that these parts will not work?
How much is involved in going with a crank trigger? I am not familiar with them!

The risk doesn't out weight the benifit. If one time it doesn't work and it destroys the motor was it worth it? A crank trigger is easy bolt on deal, hardest part is lining up the belts after you bolt it on.

Just don't put your crank trigger sensor anywhere near your alternator!!
I fought miss fire issues forever doing that. Finally gave up and went back to the distributor.

BigB how close is too close? I was just getting ready to order one from Summit but I do run an alternator on a low mount on the passenger side of my motor. I think I read somewhere that you can mount the sensor on either side of the motor? Any truth to that?
Thanks Mike

I had the DMI low mount on pax side with powermaster 140amp.
I couldn't mount the trigger on the drivers side with the oil filter in the way. Didn't want to buy a remote oil filter kit.

My trigger was about 1" from the alternator. It actually worked fine until my 2 Spal electric fans turned on pulling 20amps each. Then it misfired like crazy.

bigB were you using the new MSD Flying Magnet crank trigger? According to MSD "The non-magnetic pickup cannot be false triggered"
I also am running the 140 PowerMaster alternator on a low mount,2 electric fans and I also run a regular oil filter so I might have to mount it fairly close to the alternator .
I don't want to buy something that will not work!!!
Mike

I have the MSD crank trigger. MSD lies when they say it can't be false triggered. I had nothing but problems and was a waste of 300 dollars.
MSD sells an adjustable race rotor for small diameter distributor. P/n 84211. I put that on, phased it, and all my problemms went away. Should have just done that in the first place. :|
Someone else on here had the same problem a couple years ago. Never did say what he did to fix it.
Good luck.

BigB thanks for the reply!
I may try the adjustable race rotor like you and 67dartgt use but I have a question? Do you guys use much nitrous and how much are you retarding with the small cap and adjustable race rotor?
Thanks Mike
