Here is what i have. 65 Dart 3380 lbs, 408 dynoed at 504 hp, mainly street, a few trips to the track planned.
I now have a Carter electric 65gph 6psi no regulator needed pump. From cell to Fram large filter -10, 3/8 fittings and hard line with no sharp turns to a regulator at rear of motor, regulator set to allow max flow/no resistance. I could put a gutted regulator body in its' place if it will help.
The car runs great at WOT till after the 2/3 shift, then it felt off a bit but i have no pressure gauge to go by.
I want to switch to a 65 Mustang gas tank in this car so if a better pump becomes a need, suggestions on a very low noise system would be appreciated.
What do you all think? Pump OK? Pump marginal? Just too small?

Hi Greg. I personally never had any luck with that small carter pump keeping up years ago when I tried it.

Get the HP 100gph+ version and install a regulator.

If your not stumbling or lagging from launch to 1-2 shift, then your pump is keeping up with with the launch inertia which is the first major issue with launching and fuel volume. If only investigating fuel issues, then your bowls might be running out of fuel. 65 gph is too little for a 408. That output is good for a stock motor. Maybe a Holey Blue at least. I like the Black Gerator. Handles all fuels and the pump is quiet enough, yet its easy to listen for when trouble shooting. Don't forget a return line, can be from the rear fuel filter,before the pump,or at the carb. Paper element filters, in general, swell and reduce the fuel flowing through. Add some extra moisture from pump gas and that can be an additional restriction. A streetable stroker SB can easily perform with a 950 carb. Its an indication of how much fuel it wants. When it comes to fuel, bigger is better, 1/2" fuel line, easy flowing direction( as you've done) and a larger adjustable pump remove any fuel delivery issues.

BS on no regulators EVER imo because those toy pumps can and do spike higher than needed at times and can drop dangerously low at higher r's.........seen it personally and fuel pressure control goes deeper than most know..........

500 hp needs about 250 lbs/hour of fuel which is roughly 40 gallons per hour. So your existing pump should be fine if it can actually flow 65 gph at 6 psi. A free flow test doesn't tell you what it flows at 6 psi.

If you're going to switch tanks then buy one with an internal EFI pump. Those are nice and quiet and they have plenty of flow. You'll need to add a regulator and a return line but you'll have a top notch fuel system.

A 240 lph EFI pump should be all you need and they are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks guys. Being a mainly street rod with a nice quiet exhaust and a great radio, i will go with the EFI pump. About $500 for a tank,pump/fuel sender kit for a 65 mustang, which will fit nicely because i have removed the spare tire well. Being cheap never pays. When i bought the Carter i was thinking it would be quiet enough and cheap to boot. Not so much 😒

I run a holley red inline with a big carter mechanical. Works perfect! If the electric dies it will run to about 4000 rpm pulling through the dead electric, so it would get you home. Also if the car sits and the fuel evaporates out the electric will help refill the bowls. What carb is on it. The only down side ciuld be if the mechanical tears the diaphram the electric will fill the crankcase with fuel. Been running that setup for years.

Fury, it has a Quickfuel 850 on it. The noise issue is pushing me to go in tank. I promised the Mrs this would not be a race car,,,,,,,😂 car weighs 3380 with me in it, so it is pretty snappy😍 I do want to run Sportsman class a few times for fun, 12.00 and slower footbrake is the bracket, so i don't have to mess with a rollbar or jacket.

Common in-tank EFI pump uses industry standard 43.5 psi, which increases flow in your stock fuel line dramatically.

How are you going to slow it down to 12.00?

At a minimum i will let it shift on its' own. Full forward standard type valvebody. I am not sure what i want to do to take more ET out of it and still have a killer mph. Gears are 3.55, and will run 28 inch slicks.

My math says you should be in the 10.70ish range at 124 or so. To slow it down that far, you'll need to pull 2 plug wires and hire a 450 pound driver.

As you already know the only positive way to find out if you have enough fuel delivery is to be able to jet it rich enough to slow the MPG down in the 1/4 mile
I've seen a bunch of race cars that had enough fuel delivery in 1st and 2nd gear to go fast to the 1/8 mile and then run out of enough fuel to go as fast as it should have in the 1/4 mile Once they fixed the fuel system they all went quicker and faster in the 1/4 mile
Good luck on your deal having to much fuel delivery is like having to much money in your wallet

Thanks Cab. I am going to go with the intank deal, and it will get rid of the iritating pump noise. Too bad the whole deal is that pricy. Anybody need a good fuel pump for thier garden tractor?😀
