Headed back from track early with a friend of mine- broke the u-joint straps .
Ladder bar car, 512- pinion angle good .
Anyone know of better straps than the standard u- bolt style from Mancini etc?

Thanks.

Get billet straps. I believe summit has them.

I would upgrade to a billet yoke with the heavy duty thru bolt straps.

Something is wrong other than the straps, they are there to hold the U joint back into the yoke solidly, not to take any of the load from the U joint or driveshaft scope
Yukon sells replacement billet aluminum yoke that comes with U bolts instead of straps for the 8 3/4 rear ends, just like the Mopar stock Dana 60 steel 1330 yokes have scope

I would take a close look at your yoke. The majority of the u joint cup should be a snug fit in the yoke. The hold down strap is for exactly that, to hold it down. The strap doesn't really take any force. Do you have straps with bolts? I used Moroso aluminum caps for a while. The threaded u joint straps, I'm not sure what upgrade parts there are.

I have had that happen, found the yoke had spread. Took me a few u joints to figure what the problem was.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

I will bet your U-joint angle is off.. I run the
simple little straps with the 4 small bolts..
never broke any of that... thats with a 1.19
60' on a alum 8 3/4 rear
EDIT
Or your ladder bar angle is off(pinion angle)

If you look at the design you will see that the
cups go into the yoke OVER half way... that way
all the load is on the yoke.. the bolts or straps
are there to just keep the joint from falling out

I kept having trouble last season with a 7290 yoke. I used loc-tite on the bolts, torqued properly, etc. I kept breaking one strap bolt and then carnage...

Once I got that end fixed with a 1350 yoke and u-bolts, I broke the 7290 FRONT slip yoke! shock

I finally just ordered a new Strange shaft with 1350's at both ends!

According to my Virtual dyno, my engine makes 687 ft/lbs. @ 3450rpm. Couple that with its obesity and drag radials and it tends to be hard on driveline parts!

'63 Dodge 330
11.19 @ 121 mph
Pump gas, n/a, through the mufflers on street tires with 3.54's. 3,600 lbs.
10.01 @ 133mph with a 250 shot of nitrous an a splash of race gas. 1.36 60 ft. 3,700 lbs.

the billet style yoke with the spicer u-bolts is the best solution - those billet caps are actually worse than the stock straps - i would be looking at angle to make sure it is right

This is true.. the fancy looking caps are a big
problem.. if you lift the car most of those caps
rub on the yoke.. that is bad.. your flexing
the cap.. you could be causing a vibration at
the rear cap

If you are breaking straps and bolts, the load isn't staying on the yoke. I think your yoke is spread or worn out, u joint cup is walking off under load.

.....and the torque on those little bolts isn’t much. You can stress the cap which can cause issues too.

I’m going to run over and check his pinion angle some time this week.

Fwiw- the one that broke looks like garbage metal- looked cast at first!
Looked at under magnifying glass - just really poor steel .

Going to put s mic night n his yoke saddles as well.

I agree with all above, never broke one myself racing. Did brake one trying to get car on trailer with unwelded, but u-bolts tight, spring perches. U-bolts couldn't keep the axel from over rotating and, snap.

Buy one of the best U joints you can get for future abuse grin Once you get it try removing one cup, or both, and press it into your current yoke to see how it fits, if it is sloppy and doesn't press and stay in their on its own then replace the yoke up scope
Let us know what you find work That feed back will help others on here in the future thumbs
