I still like my basic 20 year old timing light just for setting base timing.

I picked up a fancy new one a year ago from Summit for dialing in my mechanical advance & vacuum advance. Pretty cool you can dial in the initial timing & dial it back to the 0 on the balancer. Then you can dial it back & use the tac on the screen to do the mechanical & vacuum advance. It also does 2 stroke & its back-lit for nights.

A buddy of mine has the standard style with an actual dial to turn back the advance but he says it turns too easy & he has set it wrong because it slightly turned on him between adjustments.

The old Sears chrome 2134 or 2138 light for on an MSD. MSD sold the same light years ago for use with their stuff. Or an old Snap-On adjustable knob type for everyday stuff. If they broke, I'd go looking for the same in mint condition. If buying new, a lot of guys like the battery powered lights.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I still have one of those chrome sears lights barely used. It was my fathers. must be 30+ yrs old. My favorite light though would have to be the flaming river 1 wire 2 D cells.

Anything that MSD sells for use with their stuff is fine, I'm sure. I still use the one I bought like 30+ years ago.

I have two old chrome Craftsman. One dial back, one not. Probably 25 years old. The self powered ones are cool for avoiding fans and moving parts.

If you run an MSD ignition with a crank trigger you may find that you can't use an adjustable timing light. I have the Snap On adj light and a digital snap on and neither will work. I also tried the adj. chrome craftman and it won't work either. I ended up buying the battery powered Flaming River light, and that took care of the problem.

Craftsman chromie,or flaming river battery powered, best light's for the money for use with a multi spark ignition.

Light travels faster than the speed of sound,,,this is why some people seem bright untill you hear them speak.

The reviews of the Flaming River battery one on Amazon are far less than stellar.....It may work ok when it does, but reliability seems to be a problem.

Take care,

I still use the old chrome light I bought at the parts store almost 40 years ago, it's never let me down. I just used it on the son's minivan to check a misfire, and I've used it on CNP engines too.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

I have the INNOVA digital dial-back timing light. It works with the MSD ignition. Have a chrome dial back also, but the MSD messes it up.
