True to a point. But OP just wants to deliver as stripped shell for paint and body. If it doesn't get paint, it doesn't go to the body/paint shop. Then get back a painted shell. O.P. will do ALL re-assembly. If I'm reading that correctly??
I assume the O.P. will reassemble all the nose cone componets, wing, etc.
IMHO, that should be between $20K and $13K job on a dry car, original sheet metal. To patch panels need whatsoever. A factor could be how smashed up/previously repaired the nosecone is/was. That could take a lot of labor and expertise.

I doubt it should cost 40-50K, but without pics and/or a full list of the issues, no one can give you an estimate.
 John , Well you know that I will agree with your recommendation of Dave @ 'Copper State Creations' as I found it definitely worth the 800 + mile trip to Chino Valley , Arizona. His OUTSTANDING completion of my 1971 Challenger R/T & Dan's 1969 A-12 Roadrunner are just a couple reasons why even a couple thousand mile journey should certainly be considered. He is a true enthusiastic artist who performs incredible work in a very timely manner. With almost daily updates on progress he is 100% "A man of his word" ............

Did you have it repainted since you bought it in 1980?
Does it have any rust in it? Did it ever before? Looks like it has seem some winter or outdoor exposure since 1970. Orginally sold in an area with winters?
What it look like behind/inside the nose cone? Is there any previous repairs? How extensive and how much bondo. Most all have been dinged once.
$3000 to wet sand and buff a car sounds crazy. Maybe he is a custom, Riddler Award winning painter. Good for him then, you'd be wasting his talent. 70 Superbirds were never that nice of paint.

My car was done by a great bodyguy that lives in Harper's Ferry, WV. It is only about 90 minutes from you, right off of 340 in Harper's Ferry. He just built a shop at his home and will be working out of it. He did a great job on my car, is very reasonable, and did a 67 Coronet R/T that won Carlisle in 2009. I don't think he has restored a Superbird, but am pretty sure he has done many Runners and Chargers, as well as many other difficult cars (59 Vette, 57 Chevy, etc.). His name is Mark Harris and his number is 304-535-6523. Leave a message and he will get back to you.
Trustworthy, up front dude and you pay as you go. He encourages you to see what he has done before getting more money, and several times I helped him out..
