Summit shows a 5/8-36 spline coupler, but I think I’ve gone this rout before and it won’t fit, does anyone sell just a bare u-joint coupler with a 3/4 shaft on the weld side?

You can buy couplers with a 3/4" round weld on end on one or both ends of the coupler. They also make the couplers with a variety of sizes and styles for the other end of the coupler. You may have to buy the coupler you need directly from Borgeson, they seem to have the most options.

There is also a different splines end that fits Mopar boxes and racks, I just can't remember what size it was, for sure, but it seems like it was a 3/4 x 11 spline coupler end. Check the size of a Dakota rack end.

A round weld on end put onto a spline steering shaft end is asking for trouble. Get the correct end. Please. Gene

absolutely ! i'm not a fan of weld on joints. one wrong zap with the welder, and the joint is history. if you need to weld on your steering shaft, i would suggest obtaining a solid shaft with the spline count of your choice. turn down a 1 1/2-2" section past the splines that will press fit into your present shaft. bevel both ends good for the weld, plus add a couple holes 180* apart for plug welds. then, use a splined joint.
gene knows welding, so please listen to him.

You guys are missing what I’m asking.

The mopar power steering spline is very odd. It’s like 5/8-36 spline with a dead spline. But most speedway sweet couplers with a 3/4 weld end and a 5/8-36 won’t fit. They are to small since the mopar spline with a dead actually measure 37 spline. Sweet use to make one, but I can’t find another one.

I’d never put a bald 3/4 over the splines.

I've installed a few Borgeson 5/8" -36 spline joints on Mopar steering boxes without any issues, maybe your buying your joints from the wrong place. Gene

I am thinking of buying the borgeson joint and try that, nut the last time I tried that it did not fit. Im thinking of sticking the factory coupler in my lathe and machine it down with a 3/4 nub on the back, and tig a weld on 3/4-3/4 weld on joint from sweet. But thats a last ditch effort. I just wish that sweet would still make the exact splined coupler for the steering shaft. I know Ive used one in the past.

They obviously stopped making it of it would be in every sweet catalogue under steering coupers

i got it now. [i think whistling] if the correct coupler can't be found, and you need to machine your shaft, instead of welding on it, you should consider a 3/4 "double d" on the end you want to weld. very common from borgeson, and with whatever spline you need on the other end. or double d on both ends. basically, two big flats on a 3/4 [or 1"] shaft. when i size shafts for that kind of joint, i make the flats .001 smaller than the flat's female size.
i'm pretty sure other joint manufacturers have this double d as well as borgeson.
