Don't ask how but I managed to snap the clevis off my throttle cable. I have 5 cables in my stash and naturally none of them match what I broke. I believe it's an OE part ('68 B body with 383 4bbl/727).

Before I go buy a new cable, is there any way to repair the one I have? Like say, go down to the hardware store and rummage through the clevis and pin box in the hardware section to see if I can make something work? The rest of the cable is fine, it's just the little clevis hook on the end that attaches to the throttle lever on the carb.

That said, if there's no way to fix what I have, will a longer one work the same if I position it correctly? How critical is cable length for correct throttle opening with stock bracketry? Seems like there is some adjustment through positioning but not much.

Thanks for any input.

Don`t know if it can be repaired but I would get a new one. You don`t want a repaired cable to jam on you especially if it is at wide open throttle.

i assume you pulled the end off?

If so, one of there might suffice. You can find them in the Help! section at parts stores, usually.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Put the clevis back on and zap the end of the cable with a mig welder.

I think if I am going to repair this, I have to cut the ball off and put something on the end to hold a new clevis. Unfortunately there's not a lot of room to do much.

Thought about cutting the ball off the pedal end and pulling the cable out but it's in the sheathing pretty good near the throttle lever end so there'd be no way to get a new clevis on. I'd probably destroy it trying to get it out of the sheath. Might be a lost cause.

Maybe this will help?

Looking at your pic above I would weld that... twocents
Protect the cable from spatter...run a small bolt thru the clevis with spacers and snug it down once over the cable...spot weld it from the back side...remove the bolt and spacers and spot it from the front...
I've been using .023 wire in my mig so maybe that's why small jobs no longer bother me... shruggy

Don't have a working welder at the moment but yeah, that would probably do the trick. There's a little machine shop in my town that might be able to do it, guess it's worth a shot to bring it down.

Ah, I thought the ball broke off the cable, not the actual clevis
