Have an Eddy 750 Competition Series on a 383/auto driver car. Engine is mostly stock; nothing radical at all. Has a starting problem. Car simply wont start after sitting all night. I could crank starter all day and will not start. A shot of ether and it starts. Once it starts for first time all is well. Fuel system is in tank electric and works fine. 7 PSI to carb. Had this carb on 440 car for years and no problems at all. Choke is not hooked up and temp is about 60 degrees. Timing and spark good. Not too smart on these Eddy (AFB) type carbs. Your thoughts.

My thoughts...

Second thought is that your electric fuel pump doesn't pump with the key in run position but the engine not running. If it did you would not have this issue. But if you properly installed the pump then it wouldn't run then anyway. So, you need a pushbutton "prime" circuit. So you can fill the bowl in the morning.

If your pump is working and you have gas to the carb good chance the accelerator pump dried out. I had this happen a couple of times on old afb's. Look and see if you have pump squirt when you first pump the throttle.

An edelbrock should, note I said should, have a silicon accelerator pump cup not a leather one. So it cannot "dry out" unless someone put one in it.

If you put key to run for say 15 seconds and then turn it to start it should start if the problem is fuel evaporating out of the AFB which it sounds like it is.

I had the same problem until I connected the choke yesterday. Might be 60 out but the engine is still 40 from the overnight temps

Thank You for your input. The carb is getting fuel. The pump shot is not very strong but enough to start the car. I'll hook the choke up and see what happens.

AFTER you have a proper pump-shot, and a proper choke:

Put some real fuel in there...

Been running a 750 EdelCarter for over 20 years...

In all kinds of extreme conditions, and long stretches of sitting..

With a mechanical pump...

Zero issues...

These carbs, with the electrical choke set up right, will start with just turning the key on vehicles that get driven regularly. My experience has been to not touch the gas pedal unless you have to. If the vehicle has sat for weeks, or months, you may have to cycle the pump shot to get gas to the engine.

Double check that the choke door is not closed all the way either. I think the book calls for a gap the thickness of a paper clip between the edge of the choke door and the carb body.

Also if it has an electric choke the piston under the black plastic cap can get gummed up and cause hard starting and a rough idle. A shot of WD-40 will free it up.

I run Eddys on my race car. Obviously no choke. When it gets below 50 out I through a cloth fender cover over the carbs. Once it starts pull the cover off by reaching through the window. This would be a quick test for your problem.

Hook up the electric choke.

Gotta figure out why the carb is empty after sitting overnight. There should be more than enough fuel in the carb to start the engine with or without the pump running or the choke working.I have a Holley on mine and have started it in February(in the teens)without a choke. There is still fuel in the carb after sitting all winter in the garage.

I would take it off & set it on your bench & pull the top & fill the bowl & see where it goes

This^^^ would be a great start! Fuel pumps, chokes, etc ain't gonna help. If there's no fuel in the carb it's gonna be a hard start! If a carb can't hold fuel overnight...there's an issue!

What sort of intake and insulation did the 440 without the problem have compared to this 383 that does?

I had a 383 with a Holley street dominater. Had everything from Oem avs, to the eddy 750 you have, to a 3310 on it. I had trouble with no fuel after a week sitting. No problems overnight, but I played around with gaskets and spacers, trying to stop boiling enough to prevent the need of gas down the throat after a week. Stock flat hood so I couldn’t just throw a huge spacer on and be done.

With a gasket or two, it started great, but you could tell the carb was hot as it took a split second to light off. The biggest spacer I found that still fit was about 3/8 of an inch of old school cardboard paper type stuff. Started as good or better than efi. Still didn’t cure the dry bowls after a week. Didn’t matter enough to me to put on an electric pump before I sold the car.

I want my fair share

UPDATE:
Took the top off the carb today and replaced the accelerator pump. Additionally adjusted the floats (both were off by a lot; close to a half inch on level and drop). The old accelerator pump diaphragm was almost gone. This would explain the poor pump shot. Car fired right up and run good. I appreciate all the input. Car is fixed. Thanks

Edelbrock carbs didn't have a Competition Series, did they? Carter did.
Is it possible that the carb was a Carter Competition Series?
I'm assuming by the word "diaphragm" you mean the plunger cup.
