Does anyone know if someone makes a starter for a Hemi engine, 11 inch flywheel, and 440 type blow shield? I can use either ring gear that's for a 440 or 426. The blow shield takes the regular auto starter not the direct drive Hemi one. Hope I made this clear.

Are you using one of the early 170 tooth hemi flywheels or one of the later 143 tooth flywheels? The 170 tooth has to use the direct drive starter only, no matter which bell housing or scatter shield brand shruggy
If your using a 143 tooth flywheel any of the gear drive Mopar specific starters will work on the 143 tooth ring gear thumbs

Ok, here's what I have. Hemi 11" wheel 8 bolt crank, starter ring is on the front, clutch side, 170 tooth, uses a direct drive starter. A 143 ring will fit in same place on that wheel. In fact it's on there now.
On a 383-440 flywheel the ring is on the back side so a reg starter will fit. My bell housing (for a 440) will only accept a regular starter. I looking for a standard bolt on starter that will reach the front ring whether 170 or 143 tooth count.
Now if I make an 1/8 spacer for the ring gear I can put it on the back of the flywheel ( Hayes, the maker, in their infinite wisdom cut the wheel smaller on the back).
Who would have ever thought someone would use a Hemi crank in a 440?! (Sarcasm)
One crank, one flywheel and one bell housing sure would have been nice, And people want to know why Mopars cost so much!

Is it really only an 1/8" that the nose needs to be toward the trans.? Not positive but does it seem like you could grind a 1/16 off of both mating surfaces pretty easily? I think the starter I use (15-1 compression) from Napa are about $60.00 or so. I wouldn't hesitate to grind on it. I have to shim my starter towards the engine on my race car. I didn't like the idea of shims or washers in the crank flange equation.

If I was you, I have gone through this same thing years ago, I would buy a Hemi 143 tooth flywheel and don't look back twocents That way any gear drive Mopar starter will work and you can buy them everywhere thumbs
Adapting starters, ring gears and bell housing is something I wouldn't do tsk Buy the correct parts now work

I don't know if anyone makes a better starter now, but I remember from "back in the day" the direct drive starters were all a POS.

The ring gear is to big (1/8) to be pressed on the back side, wheel machined smaller on the back then at the front (why would they do that?)
I have the same starter, used it on a 15-1 engine too. Junk yard Dakata one, the one I would like to use.
I have the 440 flywheel that I got the ring gear off (back, toward engine) and compared the distance between the two wheels from crank flange. 9/16 to the edge where the starter would first engage.
Bingo, just thought of using a 1/2 inch mid plate-spacer (not where the starter bolts up), that might get me off easy. Im gonna check now
Cap, if there's no starter that will work, that's the other option, buy a wheel made for the 440 (8 bolt) with 11"-143 teeth on the back side.
Starter-flywheel-bell housing, whichever will be $350-500

Forget the 172 Hemi wheel, the teeth have a different pitch than the 143 and 130 wheels. You can't use a direct drive starter if you wanted.
Rob MC has a good direct drive starter for the '66-'69 Hemis.

If your bell is a for a 143 wheel, you can use an aftermarket 8 bolt wheel.

If your bell is for a 130 wheel, you can use an OEM Hemi wheel.

If your bell is a Lakewood, you can use a 143 or 130 wheel.

I'd go with a Lakewood bell, or an aluminum '70-'71 bell, and an aftermarket 130 wheel.

Correct on all points you gave.
My bell is one size only, 143-172, both have the same diameter (in fact I took the 172 off and pressed the 143 back on) but made for the standard starter. I also have a 130 tooth 10-1/2 wheel but the bell won't fit it and the high dollar clutch is 11"
So my only least expensive options are to make the existing starter work or buy a new wheel .
I allready have, blow proof bell made for a 11" wheel, 11" Hemi Hayes flywheel and a complete 11" clutch set up

What bell is this? Other than a Lakewood, I know of know others. The tooth pitch us different between the gear reduction and direct drive starters.

If your bell is for a 143 wheel, buy an aftermarket 8 bolt 143 tooth wheel.

I had a '67 Hemi Charger that someone had converted to a OEM 440 bell, 143 aftermarket wheel and a standard gear reduction starter, it worked great. My '67 Belvedere has the OEM direct drive starter, not so great. I plan to swap it over to the Rob MC/Mallory 3008.

Ansen made all three scatter shields for Mopar BB and Hemi motors a long time ago, there may have been other companies also shruggy
Mopar and it's way of making parts for one or two combinations only runaway

The 143 and 172 are the same size diameter, different pitch, both fit that flywheel, only in the wrong place.
I might have the Anson bell, no name, but it is hydro-formed, it's for a wedge because of the starter bolt up.
Push comes to shove I'll have to buy the 143 wheel (to get the ring on the back side) and give the other two away.

Rob Mc is one of the good guys in my book.

He will still answer questions about the Erson rockers he designed years ago.

He has not worked for Erson for years.
