Okay, getting all the bugs worked out on a fresh 440/727 we just installed in a 69 GTX (thanks for everyones help. This thing burns some serious rubber ). What causes the flare up at the 1-2 shift? Band adjustment? 2nd to 3rd shift is nice and solid. Oh, and the kick down isn't working either. Has a Lokar cable on it. Thanks!

I get the same reaction with a 80,000 unrebuilt 727 in my Truck with a 440/727. I just figured that the trans is fragged.

Quite often that is the kickdown band set to loose!

Is the kick down band adjuster the one on the outside of the trans?

IF this has been flaring-UP for some time ... you might have hurt the band OR evn the drum also .....

DROP the pan and check the pull on the front apply lever.

First, it isn't a kick down , it is a throttle pressure valve.
It tells the trans what power it is going to get!!
You are over powering it and slipping the front band. There should be no flair up on the 1-2 shift. If the band is adjusted wrong it can flair on the 2-3 shift.

Exactly , 1-2 shift is just the band applying and stopping the drum , till the drum stops you are in FIRST gear, if you are seeing the rpm jump then the rear clutch is slipping, which is not a good thing either.
