I've read now in a couple of books that the '72-'74 4bbl 400's had a cast crank that was stronger then the usual cast crank. Anyone else heard this, and how can these cranks be identified?
Thanks!

Find one of the millions of 383's out there. Craigslist is a good place to look. And use the forged crank from it. You'll need a new balancer and torque converter, but if you're at the point where you're worried about the strength of a crank, Don't even mess around with a cast one!

No, I'm not worried about it, but I have a '73 4 bbl and was wondering if I had that crank?

I agree with this , just get a 383 crank if you are worried about strength ..

stronger cast crank ??? I highly doubt that , where did you read this fairy tale ? fast68plymouth was making over 500hp in his 383 using a cast 400 crank , car ran low 11's ...

Don Taylor's Big Block Mopar Engines makes this claim, and I've seen it elsewhere. Apparently it was a cast crank that was steel shotpeened. But I understand the logic of using a forged 383 crank.
