They are having problems on the newer Rams too? I know this is a common issue on the 1994-01 Rams. Quote:
I think you'll find the dealer is the only option on one of those.
Among other things, It's part or the airbag system. Aftermarket companies seem hesitant to get involved with that for liability reasons.
Not true. I just replaced the clockspring in my 2001 Ram 1500 5.9L and it was $50.00 shipped from Advance Auto Parts online shopping (partsamerica.com). It is a Dorman part and has a lifetime warranty. Even better it only took about 40 minutes from start to finish to removed the old one & install the new one. Of course I just looked up your '06 and they are not showing one

They won't warranty a safety item like that?
Stuff like that is usually only covered on basic warranty.
I know we replace many at Ford(my day job), and very rarely are they under warranty. Commonly they are physically damaged during improper steering gear replacement, or other component work.
Also commonly damaged in collisons.
Neither situation would be the parts fault, even if it was still under the warranty period.

plus, why warranty something that breaks all the time? have you tried junk yards? the clock spring isn't like the airbag iteslf is it? one time shot? I don't know what exaclty it is, or how it works, what it does, other than it's in the steering wheel, and it has something to do with the airbags.

you could also try rockauto.com
I just ordered a pair of rear calipers for my dakota. Advanced wanted like $42 each.
Autozone wanted $82
Rock Auto wanted $36 and shipping was only $9. Ordered my parts Friday, got them on Monday morning.

The clock spring is actually an interesting part.. Its nothing more than a large ribbon cable about 6-8 feet in length and then wrapped around in circles about about 15 times and held inside a fancy plastic container..
On one end of the cable attaches to the wires in the steering colum, the other end attaches to the air bag and switches located on the steering wheel.
This allows you to turn the steering wheel in either direction and keep the electrical connection..
In my case, I had the truck in the dealership back in May of this year.. They were to replace the adjustable brake pedal that broke.. To do this the tech needed to remove the steering colum.
Since that servicing, the horn/cruise/airbag worked intermittently... then it stopped completely.. This last weekend, we tore into the steering colum expecting to find a loose wire connection or something similair.. What we found was a clean break in the ribbon cable.
Like I said earlier, the cost from the dealer is $180 and all my searching here on the internet, the only clock spring I can find is for 2002 and older Dodge Rams..
Thanks anyways to you all.. I'll keep looking..

Aftermarket clockspring selection is limited. I needed one for my 2000 Neon and that exact clockspring was used only on 2000-2001. Nothing was available from the aftermarket. Junkyards would not sell the clockspring, only the whole steering columun. I had to go to Mopar. Local dealership wanted $235 out the door, got one from www.dodgeparts.com for $160 shipped. -Make sure you disconnect your battery first -Static electricity will fire these things off -Don't position yourself where if it goes off, your face is in the line of fire -After the R&R, sit on the passenger side the first time you turn the ign key It a fairly easy repair. I had my Neon clockspring changed out in 30 minutes. About the only non-common tool needed is a steering wheel puller and the can by borrowed from the Autozone loan program. I used the puller I use for harmonic balancers. The AIR BAG light didn't bother me. The only reason I spent the $ was to get my horn and cruise control working again, the connection for those two features go thru the clockspring.
