just to confirm before installing the right side (in picture) of this rear main seal faces towards the #3 main cap.....tapered edge (left in photo) towards the bellhousing?

Agreed, the right side of the image shown, goes towards front of the engine.

Just look at it like it was a dam on a river, you have the flat wall that faces the fluid to b contained then a tapered wall on the back side to support it

Seal lip toward oil, <- ]
So that any internal oil force toward will tend to spread the lips to the sealing surface of the shaft. If the oil force hits on the tapered side of the seal it would tend to 'crush' it outward away from the sealing surface of the shaft and open up letting the oil flow past.

Lip orientation
The lip on the rear main seal should point toward the crankshaft and not towards the back of the engine. The lip on the seal is designed to allow oil pressure to force the seal against the crankshaft, improving its sealing capability. When the seal is pointed the wrong way, it allows oil pressure to force oil past the seal, resulting in a leak

If you still have a leak after replacing the seal, don't just do the job again. You need to look deeper there might be a loose cam bearing that is spinning, blocking the oil passage way. This would cause added increase in oil pressure that gets past the seal. This news sux, but it hurts less than beating your head against a wall.

A loose cam bearing wouldn't cause a rise in oil pressure that would blow past the seal.

MP also used to make a rear main bearing that was supposed to help reduce the chance of the seal leaking. It had to grooves cut in the lower half to direct oil away from the seal. (I don't know the part # off hand). I just had this issue with my 408. I had the black seal as in the picture above and it leaked for no apparent reason. I replaced it with the orange style one as in the picture earlier in this thread and duplicated the rear main bearing like the MP unit and it solved the problem.

Haven't used it myself but several posters have & it fixed the leak though I'd think proper use of a seal/sealer should take care of it & would b a better way of dealing w it exp as there's the oil pan junction nearby & you dont want a leak from there (or anywhere)

+1 The Magnum orange seal (P/N 4798216AC) did it for me as well

This seal has two lips, the small one is a dust shield and goes toward the bellhousing. Also, install it 1/4 inch offset so the the joint is not located between the cap & the block...
