It is currently a 360 4 barrel that eats gas. I want to install a smaller engine with good torque and road manners. I know a 360 has more torque but i want to get 14-16 mpg. Is that possible??

It is the stock cast iron Tquad manifold with an aluminum spread bore to square hole adapter and a Holley 600 cfm carb. Free flowing single exhaust with a glasspack.

the 318 will definitely get better fuel economy over the 360 in different applications. your problems will be, the weight of that RC,the gears,no overdrive, more bulk of the 727 internals, less cubes(with the 318),all will combine to get less than stellar results in fuel economy. you will likely do all that work, and gain 1 mpg, or none.
i mean face it,your not driving a 4-cyl dakota. your driving a big heavy pig,with not-so-highway friendly gears,and a V-8. great mpg's are not looking good........

I don't see that cam being a hog on gas.Short duration and wide lsa should work well.
Lose the holley 600 and go back to the thermoquad if you want mileage.
14 may be doable on the highway if everything else is tuned well but not around town.
Work on tuning the 360 and lose the holley. You will spend a lot of money on the swap with minimal gain.

I've got a similar duration roller cam in a magnum headed 318 in my 4000 lb 5th ave. I average 17.5mpg mixed with it.

an '87 318 in a truck will be flat tappet, but should be a roller cam block. I'd look at the smaller voodoo roller, too...contact board member scratchinfortraction for details. he might have a used voodoo roller cam for sale, too.

yep, mine is a high milage 360 headed 318 cop engine, never had the heads off, pushing I guess upwards of 275,000 miles

with patrick recomending the lunati 60710 roller cam for my 85 stepside truck

258/264
207/213
.485/.485

used a set of comp 901-16 springs,they drop on,are single with damper,use stock seals/retainers..no rotators-used 16 intake retainers
used all stock roller lifter/PR/hardware

lunati springs are a double and need machine work and guide/seal work

heres the rest of it,knocks back 18 mpgs and is now starting to get a little blow by,but runs strong and daily

LD4B intake
600 edelbrock carb
headers
2.5" duels
904 hs-lu tranz
8 3/4 3.23sg

has a point dist with pertronix conversion with flame thrower coil,by pass the ecu and BR runs full 12 volts to coil with conversion

not a race truck by a long shot but it does haull azz down the road

also have run the lunati 292/292 bracket cam with the comp 901-16 springs in a 360

choppy chop chop like a chebby but ran strong

used another voodoo also in a 360, the 230/230 @.050 range,I just built it for some one,ran good but never got any more feed back on it

if you do decide to convert to a roller, PM me, I have some good used roller lifters and pushrods out of my 5th ave (76k miles on them). I had to convert to magnum lifters that pushrod oil for my magnum heads.

you'd have to source the dogbone & spider lifter retainers, though...I sold my spares a few years ago.
