Getting ready to install a Comp Cams XE274H in my small block 410 stroker. Currently my plan is to run my 2.02 valved J-heads on the motor. Comp Cams recommends their 995 spring for use with this cam, but these are double springs requiring machining to the head. Something I want to avoid. Furthermore, the 995 springs would require new retainers as well.

I’m contemplating running the 901 single spring with damper instead. It’s a 99% street car and I don’t intend to rev the snot out of the thing, so my gut feeling is that I should be okay.

These heads are a budgetary compromise. Really want to run a set of prepped- RHS heads, but I’m a few bonus checks away from being able to do that. Bottom line is that I don’t want to put any more money into these J-heads than necessary.

The lift on the cam “only” 491/480. I purposely selected it over the higher lift, but similar duration XE275HL for that reason.

Any suggestions?

I don't have an answer for that. But I run the spring that came with my Edelbrock head with my very similar 274-S cam. Just a solid version of what you have.

I happy with that cam. Nice street compromise. More torque than I can put down on the street even with a single plane intake.

BTW you're title says 274HL- high lift cam. Might confuse people.

Ditto about the "HL" piece. Sounds like you are running the xe274h cam, which if thats the case I ran a single w/ dampner on my 587's in a very low comp 360. Pulled 5600 rpm without issue and about 5800 with the xe284h cam. You only need about 85-90 lbs on the seat, but 100-110 would be better.

Yes. It's the XE274L

Don't you mean H for hydraulic ? If thats the case the 274 calls for around 300 open load, which is important with this aggressive cam profile.
