went to the parts store for a alternator for my brothers 1973 440 pickup. The one I took off has 1 power wire and 2 field wires. The one they gave me only has 1 field wire. They swear it's the right one. What gives??

The one they gave you is for single field/mechanical regulator vehicles 1969 and down,....you need a dual field roundback,....order a stock/repro Power Master alternator from Summit Racing.com, about $100....brand new case/internals/etc,...leave the cheap rebuilt stuff at the retail parts store

Just take it back and ask for one off a 78 'doba or something.

Last time I bought an alternator they had both one and two field versions with the SAME PART NUMBER. It just depended on which box you opened.

That's what I thought. Thanks guys. I can't believe they use the same number for both. WTH?

Picking-of-nits department checking in here...

Just as the term posi cheeses off more than a few members here, the fingernails can be heard on the chalkboard when people refer to mopar alternators of the "dual" or "two" field persuasion.

There is no such thing as a "dual field" mopar alternator!!!

All have but a single field, although some fields get both their power AND GROUND externally.
Those particular ones with two field connections have an ISOLATED FIELD.

Thank you for your attention. Carry on.

Down to just a blue car now.

Oh I agree. Might ask for one from iirc a 80's M body, it's a 78 amp unless someone chimes in that it is not a direct bolt in which I think is what you are after
