I am using a "971" oil pan on my 383. This is a baffled pan with a windage tray. I have the pickup, but it's loaded with junk I can hear rattling around inside of it. I was wondering if anyone had a part # that would work for this particular oil pan.

Thanks

Just give the PU a good soak and that junk should come out OK.

Like hot water and Simple Green or soap? I have a parts washer I could also put it in if that would be better?

I read that this pan is actually from a '73-'78, I'm putting it in a '68 Satellite. Any idea if this thing will even fit? It was in a '69 Charger so I'm ASSuming it would.

Pick ups are cheap, you'll never get it clean..Wiping out the bearings & taking out the crank won't be... Keep in mind Doc still has his first penny... I don't have a pt# for you but Melling makes them.. Last Mopar one I bought was around $20.00..

If it's a baffled you need a dog leg pickup to use with it. They're harder to find than the straight pickup. Yes clean your old one the parts washer is a good start. Compressed air works wonders for getting those chunks to break up.

Take care,

OK Mr Money Bags ....

I want to see you throw a TWENTY DOLLAR BILL out your window. I think not ....

All he probably has in-there is a piece of cast-iron or sludge hung-up on the screen. FOR SURE if you can't get that piece outa-there you should not chance-it. That piece of trash could get up into the oil-pump or bearings. It should blow-out with some compressed air.

Just soak the screen-area for a couple of days.

Any time you want to know why I won't reuse a pick up screen try cutting one open & see how much crap is really trapped inside.. I made a living working on this junk not being a keyboard commando.. I spend money on stuff because it's cheaper than the alternative... Yeah lots of guys reuse screens, the first time you cut one open you'll realize it's a bad idea..

The filter is between the pickup and the bearings/crank.

On hard to find pickups I always throw them in the hot tank with the block..they'll come out as clean as the block.

I give up.. You guys are right, just reuse it... He's not working on a max wedge, it's a fairly common pick-up tube, my local production machine shop stocks hundreds of styles I can have one on Monday...The fact that they race Mopars doesn't hurt, they know the part number & they stock it...

Well I tried soaking it and blowing it out, still junk rattling around in there...

What came out so far looks like old seals or gasket material.

Gotta give it more time than a couple of hours ... at least over-nite.

I am redoing a 413 truck motor and I grabbed the PU off of that ...and checked it out. All I did was knock the screen-end on a block of wood(it loosened the crud up) and the stuff came right out.

NO metal in there just valve-stem-seals and what looked like parts of a VC gasket.

Sounds exactly like what's in mine.

Thanks for that Mopar link too on the different oil pans Jim

Cheap ass....

Thanks for all the info guys.

I'm soaking it in the parts washer for a few days like Doc mentioned and then I'll see what I can do with it. I actually need to order a few things from Summit so I may pick up that part if I can't get all the junk out of it.

I'll waste my time one more time.... I've cut them open when they have spent time in a hot tank & look great.... Inside are areas that traps hard debris.... Your motor, your choice......

Oh, might as well add a link too..

Yeah I was real hesitant to even post but now that I have for the record I too would spring for a new one & I'm a believer in going to 1/2" (even on a SB) pickup and doing extensive oiling mods. "bottom line rod journals need to b fed & they're at the end of the line"
