I'm considering buying a set of used Hedman headers and have a question. I've always heard that the thicker the flanges the better and these headers only have 1/4" thick flanges. Is it common to have leakage problems with only a 1/4" thick flange? I would like to get some better headers with maybe a 3/8" flange but I can't afford them at this time which is why I am considering these used Hedman's.

Do they have a welded sealing bead? If so take a marker and color the entire bead. Then take a wide fine toothed file and lightly file in an 'x' pattern until all the color is gone. Do this to each of the ports and then put a little hi-temp copper rtv on the gasket and you should be good to go. Keep an eye on the header bolts for the first few miles as they will want to creep back out.

Don't be tempted to use a sanding block, sandpaper or anything other than the file.

I've never had a problem with Hedman Hedders leaking, but I do suggest you use REMFLEX gaskets.

Check the flange for warpage, too. I like to cut off the unnecessary part of the flange for that reason as well as better spark plug access.

These are Hedman Elite headers on my 63 and they look to about 1/4" thick flanges which are a good size flange. I have had no problems with any leaks at all with these headers. Ron
