I have a 91 Dakota 5.2 v8 2 wheel drive.
It has 133,000.miles. The trans started slipping.
I did a fluid and filter change but that didn't help much.
It shifts fine when you take off fast, but if you leave from a stop and slowly get up to speed, it will shift from first to second fine.It is the 2nd to 3rd shift that it hangs up. Any idea's?
Someone has to know what to look for.

Are you saying the trans actually slips or does it just hang in second gear for a bit before it shifts into third ? Ron

It seems to not want to shift out of 2nd
unless you get over a certain speed or
accelorate quickly. Getting on the freeway it shifts perfect, driving through town it doesn't
like to shift to 3rd. (not really slipping.)

There are a couple of things that can cause that, but before you condem anything internal, make sure the Throttle pressure (Kickdown) linkage is free and that the return spring is intact at the throttle body.
91`s still had a rod on them and are known to rust at the lever on the trans.

You are so right Rick as I have seen alot of the rusted throttle kickdown linkage binding over the years. But boy does the Mopar rust penitrate do a job on the rusty linkage. Like Rick says check that first. I have seen problems with the front clutch drum also and it lets the piston stick sometimes and not shift into third right away or until you get enough road speed to give it more gov pressure so it will shift. If it gets real bad sometimes reverse will be delayed also. We would replace the front drum and piston and of course reseal the trans. But lets hope you just have some sticking kickdown throttle press linkage. Ron

Thanks guys,
I will check out my linkage and hose it
down with some penetrating fluid.
That might be the problem, truck is not used too
often.
