Hey everyone - I want to replace the Carter AFB on my 1969 Super Bee with a new one. Where is a good source to buy a stock (or close to stock) replacement?
Thanks!!

If not an AFB, then what is the correct carb for my car? Neil - the edelbrock seems like a good idea for reliability and performance, but it does not look original enough. I am not doing a 100 percent concours resto, but the carb should look right. We drove the car for the first time yesterday!! However, it idles really poorly under 1400 rpm, plus we are finding that we cannot seem to adjust the thing (no noticeable results when turning screws). The carb was apparently rebuilt.

Yuor car had an AVS , its been out of production for decades . Bthe Ebrock thunder series is the only carb that is close in function and appearance to the AVS .
Talk to Scott Smith , I'm sure he could make one look like the old AVS , buy the 650 Thunder series , don't buy the one with the Endura finish.

I'm definitely keeping the carb - it might be the original one for my car. I guess the thing to do is buy an Edelbrock carb and use it since I plan on driving my car. The Carter can go into hibernation until I am ready to have it properly restored. So, is Summit a good place to buy it, or are there better dealers out there?

Keep in mind that the new Edelbrocks have the bigger top dia. and may not fit your original air cleaner base opening. Also, the price of a new carb will probably be as much or more than what you'd pay a restorer to make your old one as good as new again. (hint, hint ) Here's an example of one I recently restored (before pic)

If it's an AFB it's NOT the original carb , my guess is he is confusing the 2 .
Not that it matters he's replacing it.
new bee , check Summit, Jegs, price will be roughly the same.
Only thing you need to figure out is what king of choke you want, adapt the original setup or just buy one with the electric choke.

if it is an AVS(& the original one) then he would want to know that before he makes his decision. Yes it's very easy to confuse the two.

It's likely I am confusing the two. Since the car is sitting in a garage 25 miles from here, I cannot confirm. So, the original ramchager air cleaner might not fit? That is not what I want to hear. Scott, how quickly can you restore my carb? I want to drive the car before summer is over.

So, anyone know if a 1969 ramcharger air cleaner will fit on an edelbrock 650 carb?

That would be excellent, Neil. Thanks to whoever comes up with that diameter!

in the mid 60's (65? 66?) the carter 4bbls went from a smaller top diameter to the common 5 1/4" top diameter
as far as i can tell that didn't change till 68 .
that aside, it sounds like he has the air cleaner already on it and he is calling it the wrong carb

OK, I ordered the Edelbrock carb from my local parts place. I can pick it up this evening. Earlier today, I talked to Summit's tech people and they said the top diameter is 5-1/8". Will this still work with the stock air cleaner?

did you miss the part in this thread were it was said ....
YES IT WILL FIT
????
the only thing you may have to do is bend up the 2 small locatiing tabs at the rear of the carb opening on the air cleaner base , stock carbs have notches to orient the air cleaner and keep it from turning .

One more question!
Wiull this carb fit on a stock intake manifold, without using any special adapters?

Oh, and don't try taking the carb from the box and bolting it right on the car. I have put 5 or 6 of them on and from my experience they are just thrown together. You MUST take the lid off and check the float drop in both directions and make sure the jets are tight. Turn the two air mixture screws all the way in and then back them out 2-1/2 - 3-1/2 turns. This will get it close enough that it should run and you can fine tune it with a vacume guage later.
Also if you bought the electric choke model there is a fast idle screw hidden way down on the linkage. The last carb I put on this screw was way out of adjustment and when I went to start the engine the rpm went sky high instantly. Scared the crap out of me and not good on the engine.
Good advice

You may need the chrysler kickdown adapter/throttle linkage part that they sell seperately. When I bought my 800 avs in the picture I posted earlier I had to go back and pick up the adaptor thingy that bolts onto the existing linkage.
he will absolutely need the adaptor or else the connecting the throttle cable will be an issue

Who is building the Carters now? I thought they were still available.
A 9626 was the 625cfm Mopar model.

From an earlier post above, pretty much nailed it. Edelbrock is using a few of the old Carter AVS designs but many of the original configurations (AFB etc.) are long gone.
Quote:
To clarify something about the various makers of the carbs, Carter went out of business. Edelbrock bought the RIGHTS and probably the patterns to make the carb with their name on it, their carb is built by Weber. Federal-Mogul got I believe the whole Carter empire and made the AFBs for a few years, then quit production. So it was F-M that killed the Carter AFB.

In the last few years I guess Federal Mogul quit building the. I remember seeing them in a Summit catalogue within 2 -3 years ago. Just checked Summit they aren't listed anymore.
They still sell the fuel pumps and Zip kits.

I don't think you'll need it with a manual transmission since there isn't any kickdown linkage.

Without it the throttle cable will be at an odd angle , the bracket is about 10 bucks , just get it .
