I'm putting the stock oil pan/pickup on a 70 Hemi. Bought what I thought were the correct pieces (1/2" pickup). Went to install and have intereference. Either the pickup is too long or the pan is too short. Can someone provide the correct height/depth of a factory stock hemi oil pan. Thanks

Not sure on the exact depth (5 - 5 1/2") but I'd add the stock style pickup is supposed to touch the bottom of the pan. The pickup has a shroud that rests on the pan bottom to hold the pickup screen off the bottom a little to allow flow. It sort of a failsafe design so the system still works if the piclup moves around or the pan bottom gets bent.

I used Mancini's pan/pickup kit and it worked out fine.

Wanted to ask if you have the OE pieces to compare or is this from scratch? May need to tap the hole deeper w an NPT tapered tap or rethread the pickup more

It would be helpful to know how much interference there is.

Its from scratch. Bought the car last year from Cali. Very close to a survivor except it had a deep sump pan (welded maybe 8 quart). Want to make it all as stock as possible. Just for fun I already had the gaskets and tray gooped up and ready to go. Not a fun cleanup. Thanks

I'm assuming w the other pickup that the block was threaded deep enough for a snug engagement so I'd get a die & cut more threads on the pickup as w you going together (rather than a mockup) you wouldn't want to have to deal w shavings in the block pickup hole

A tap and/or die is not going to fix that.
Maybe pictures of the pan and pickup would show either the wrong pickup or the wrong pan or even both wrong.

Does the pan look like this?

That straight pickup tube will NOT work with the baffled pan. The baffled pan requires a pickup tube with a dog leg in it.

Take care,

Guess the picture was misnamed.

If what you have pictured is the baffled pan, I've never had a problem with the straight PU hitting the pan baffle. Being too long and hitting the bottom, that is a different story.

I have been looking all over for a picture of a dog leg hemi pickup for this pan, Everyone on the internet shows the straight pickup that I originally posted. Which is it? I am not going to pull my pan off to see and I honestly don't remember which style it was. Anyone have a picture that they know for sure is correct?

Yes that looks like the pan. I'll post pics of the pan and pickup when I get back to the garage.

That Hemi pan uses a STRAIGHT pickup tube.

OP did you just put the pickup in hand tight ?

You might have a '66-'69 pan and a 70-'71 pickup which is about that much longer for use in the deeper '70-'71 pan.
