I have installed a Denso alternator (440, 70 Challenger) and by-passed the ammeter with the charging output of the alt going directly to starter relay stud (added fusible links per earlier post). I ran the blue wire from the column switch (originally to the voltage regulator to the IGN wire input to the alt plug, one of the three wires (on denso plug) is not used (dash light).
My question is on the sensing wire to the alt plug-- should it be 12volt switched (ACC) or can it be 12 volt hot?
I have run it from the hot at the gauges to the alternator to 'sense' what the voltage is at that point, but am concerned about a 'hot' wire connected to this point on the alternator.
Hope this made 'sense'.
Thanks

I'm thinking you want it to a switched source or you'd be causing a constant drain on the battery

Someone else will know more, I'm keeping an eye on this post. I too have a Denso alt. so I should know this stuff too.

I plan on this, but haven't gotten around to it.

This looks to be a 'hot' sensing feed. I read an article here on Moparts in the Tech Archive (electrical) that suggests this 'sensing' back to the starter relay battery stud. Would like to confirm though before I connect the battery in and fire the engine...

I'm going through the same thing. On Andy's website, he says to put the sensing wire to the starter relay. Scroll down to near the bottom. http://www.arengineering.com/alternatorbracket/ND_bracket/denso.html

On the plug in itself, which terminal are you using for the 12V switched power, the one closer to the passenger side, or the inside one? The outer one is red, and the inner one is green. Thanks, Bob

This is the same article I was referring to (plus the 'moparts tech' has some more comments). I have the switched feed from the column (blue wire) attached to the red wire (passenger side) on the alt. The green wire (parallel tab to red wire tab) is not used (dash light). The 'top' tab on plug (blue wire) is the sensing wire, I have this connected to the 'hot' side of the ignition switch, which is downstream from the starter relay as suggested in the article I read.
I am not sure if this is correct though, it will be 'hot' at all times. If no one see's a problem...maybe it's ok...

I think this answers my question--- attach sensing wire to a hot feed (such as starter relay stud). This link is in the Moparts.com tech archive...

Thank you

I'm going through this right now replacing the generator on my Massey tractor with a Denso alternator. You can jumper the sensing terminal to the output terminal. What you end up with is a 'one wire' alternator and the small current drain that one wire alternators have. If you connect the sensing terminal to a switched feed (ignition) then you have the best of both worlds, an internally regulated alternator without the constant current drain. The third terminal on the Denso is for a charging light. I'm not going to use that as the tractor has an ammeter.
