I'd like to hear from anyone who has replaced the rack & pinion in a 1st generation LH car. I've read the procedure, but would like to hear from someone with first-hand experience. How difficult was it? Roughly how long did it take? Thanks!

Thank you for the reply. The service manual procedure says to remove the shift cable and also a "travel sensor" on the brake booster. Are these steps necessary?

The travel sensor is if I remember right ABS only and and I don't remember ever removing one, so I can't answer that one. BUT, It might be best to do so, for a newbie to avoid breaking parts.
Best I remember , Shift cable can be left in and just run the rack all the way to the pass side. Once done there is a rubber boot on the ends of the rack itself that can be folded in to gain clearence.
Also, I usually remove the tie rod ends at the ceneter attaching point on the rack to ease in removal and install. So that may be why I get them out without removing the shift cable.
