belt too loose? But that usually has noise associated with it. I once had an antifreeze leak that sprayed onto the power steering belt, had no power assist when that happened, belt was slipping so bad.

Is it a Federal p/s pump (round filler neck)? Or saginaw p/s pump.

I've noticed something like that when you make quick turns with a Federal p/s pump. They just don't seem to keep up. I changed to a Saginaw pump and never had issues.

Something similar happened to my 80 Mirada with a saginaw pump last year. I would lose assist and sometimes it would puke fluid out the cap.

I took the relief valve out of the back of the pump and found the parts and screen were covered in sludge like stuff. The valve/piston would also catch in the bore. I cleaned it up and used some emery cloth on the valve and it's been fine since.
