Hi all, i just bought a 95 Lebaron convert today. On the way home the speedo quit, is there a sensor on the trans or axle? Also, i need the trim around the instrament cluster if you know where i can find that. Thanks, Randy

I'd never put myself through that kind of pain again.

There is a sender in the trans, but not in the traditional location. I'd have to check the manual to see which one it is, but like asked above, does the cruise control work? We've got around 160,000 miles on my wife's 95. It's been among the most reliable cars that I have ever owned. We got it seven years ago with 91,000 miles.

I didn't try the cruise on the way home, but the trip meter and odometer was working because i reset it and watched on the way home. I also noticed the gas gauge didn't fall when you turn the key off. I am going to add 5 gallons to it this morning to see if its stuck or what.

assuming its a analog cluster, the gear that runs the speedo broke is my guess

This is an electric speedo, so it either has a sensor or a gear that drives a signal generator. But the question is, where is it located on a front wheel drive car? I have never owned a fwd so this is new to me.

The speedometer sensor is located on the right (passenger) back side of the trans (facing the firewall).

stop by VatoZone, or one of the other parts places, and snag a haynes or chiltons book for the car. it's a decent investment.

Thats what i was thinking, i will pick up a manual for it one day this week. I added 5 gallons of gas to it today and the gas gauge moved on up, so i guess that is working, i just need to fix the speedo so that i can drive it and start working out the bugs. Randy

The sender can be bought from any local parts house. The electronics in them are what usually fail. You need an extra elbow in your arm to really get at it from underneath but it can be done.

If the odometer was working the sender (speed/distance sensor) is fine. Also, by 1995 the S/D sensor is NOT located on the right back of the trans (extension housing for the right axle).

So, because the odometer is working, that means the gauge has issues? Just trying to be sure on this.

3 speed or 4 speed?if it shifts ok its the cluster.if the speedo does not work its the output speed sensor on the front of the transmission facing the radiator(unless you have a broken wire). There are two sensors,it will be the one one the drives side.if its a 3 speed sensor is on the passenger side housing of the transmission.

95's were ALL 3.0 and all autos in 95 (I don't know the last year for the manual trans) were the overdrive (four forward gears).

Update, we got the car out this evening and after a little while of driving around, the speedo started working again. I figure it must be a short somewhere or the car is starting to like me.
