I have a 69 Dodge Dart GT with a 7 1/4 rear and I am going to switch out rear to a 8 3/4 rear A-Body, but it has the small 4" bolt pattern what do I have to do to switch it out for a 4 1/2" bolt pattern and is it a easy swap

If you don't have the 8 3/4 yet, look for one from a 65-67 B body. They will have the big bolt pattern and even though the axle will be wider, you may be buying new wheels anyway. I have a 66 Coronet axle in my 67 Dart. Standard 15x6 wheels clear fine. I have 235 60 tires too.
Your other options include buying NEW axles with new bearings. Prices vary, but they are usually over $250.

you have to have the drums and axle re-drilled from 4" to 4.5" wbp

or use an early B-body 8 3/4 housing

or like I did,set of moser A-body spec axles with the large brake offset, green bearings(or a stock bearing)

they will make the whole A-body 8 3/4 rear axle a 1/2" wider(1/4" each side)

I ran a 7" rim with a 4.5 backset with a 245/60/15 on my 68Dart fit was perfect in the fender wells

FYI,I took the same A-body 8 3/4 axle and bolted it in the 88 440 truck I built to run 12" wide rims and a 29x15x15 M/T..used the same 4.5 backset tucked them right in

A-body and trucks share the same 43" spring centers

and dont forget to put some lipstick on the 8 3/4 when it goes in the A-body

As said go w the 65-67 B & deal w the wheel offset and the pad perch C to C diff or get a 1/2 Ton truck 8&3/4 & weld some new perches on the bottom side which'll let you set the pinion angle dead on w your cars' rake/springs. W you having a SBP 8&3/4 already you can redrill/tap the flange for 4&1/2" and use THREADED not press in studs (1/2-20). Moroso has them. Can have Moser in portland Indiana shorten a set of 1/2ton truck or C body or b or e (one of the two "b or e" I forget which) axles & use std 70's BBP 10" drum brakes from an 8&1/4 or 8&3/4 or 11" drum setup which'll require 15" wheels

I want to have the springs moved inward with the relocation kit, so I can put 275/60-15 tires on the rear, so I was just wondering whats the best way to accomplish this

As you know w that you'll be relocating the perches either way so it'd come down to modding the ends of your current SBP 8&3/4 for BBP or diff axles or grabbing a complete BBP 8&3/4 rear. Do you have your wheels picked out & know the backspace on them? EDIT W your SBP 8&3/4 did you get shock plates/ubolts/nuts w it as they're diff from the 7&1/4 ones

move the spring mounts into the frame rails/move perches on the axle

pop in a set of BBP axles with greens and your done

just spec the A-body axles with the large brake offset and the 4.5 BBP

use any brake set up off b-c-d-e-f-m-r body 8 1/4-9 1/4-8 3/4

then pic your rim with correct backset

IIRC you may have to mini tub it for that tire wheel combo

Not only have you given incorrect info about big blocks, now you are giving incorrect info on brake size/wheel combos and the axles that can be shortened.

First, 11" drums REQUIRE 15" wheels ??? That's funny hundreds of thousands of B bodies with 11" drums came standard with 14" wheels, in fact anything that didn't have a Hemi up to the beginning of the 70 model year ONLY came equipped 14" wheels.

Next, axles that can be shortened , there aren't any B or E body axles I have ever seen or seen written about in tech articles that can be shortened and resplined for use in an A body, only SOME C body axles and possibly older pickup axles might be able to usourced for this .

75dusted , do you already have an A body 8.75? Have you already swapped the front over to the big bolt pattern, there is a lot of ASSuMEing in this thread.

For give my Ignorance then, thank you.

back on topic..

i have a set of c-body axle that can NOT be cut down to A-body specs,a set of 72 4x4 truck axles that CAN be cut down, but have the 5 on 5.5 wbp.

my 67 polara axles are 30" long and CAN be cut down, but I am told a 67 polara is a c-body.

but dont some of the B-bodys and E-bodys use a 30" axle?

C-bodys and trucks/vans are the best place to find axles that are not tapperd down and could be cut to A-body specs,IMHO the C-bodys are hit and miss

KG just poped a re-splined 8 1/4 axle couple days after doing it,IMHO the 299$ for a set of moser custom alloy axles are worth the $ to do it right the first time.

Doctor diff can set you up for whats needed and a fair price as well
