Picked up a low mileage 1971 400 motor. It is the #230 casting thick web block. Was the compression ratio the same as all 400s....8.2 I heard the early 400s were closer to 9.1 Any truth to this?

If anything, the advertised CR is higher than the actual CR by about half a point.

What he said , piston in that block is about .100 in the hole, you'll be lucky to have 8.0.

I just ran some numbers , had to ASSuME a few numbers but compression is approx. 7.63 - 7.75 depending on head chamber volume .

take your conclusions:

-stock pistons are around 0.100-0.110 below the deck
-open heads are around 90 cc

These measurements are ACTUALLY AND PERSONALLY checked by me

then, IF MORE needed, add the gasket thickness.
