I gotta go away for a few months and want to keep one of those float type chargers on the family car...think its safe ?? No one will be home to watch it...house will be empty, ..are they safe to leave on without anyone there for at least 3 -4 months ???

Yes. I have had a Schumacher companion plugged in for three years nonstop keeping a battery juiced for my 12 volt music and lighting system for my hot tub powered.
And Certainly a Battery Tender is quality.
I don;t think I would leave a $6 harbor freight charger plugged in though

Battery Tender JR. user here for more than 10 years.Great quality stuff at a cheap enough price.Schumacher tenders have been around a long time as well.
I would not go and buy the float charger from Harbour Freight for $5 or $10 and leave it unattended. You never know what you're gonna get with that store,I would not want to risk it!

I would just get a manual 2 or 3 amp charger and put that on a timer. On-time maybe 2 hours per day.

If your worried, I would clean it, charge it, and pull the cables off. If its dead in 3-4 month,s of warm temps, it was no good anyways. They sit around alot longer than that before being bought as new. BTW, I have 3 HF float chargers, The 1st one died after 6yrs of use, I lost $4.99 on that one!

Agreed, those little Battery Tender JR's are great. I leave one on the Optima while the car is in storage over the winter.

I have a Sears Die Hard one. Works flawlessly.

I don't know what brand it was but Fred Henson lost a great Hemi Challenger to a fire when a battery tender burned up.

Just take the battery out of the car and set it aside until you return. If it's take a charge and holds, great, put it back in the car. Storing the car with a battery in it is dumb. To many things can happen and damage your car. I would not leave a battery charger on it,of any kind. The power spent on a battery charger could be put towards a new battery if need be.

I put a battery tender on my Night Train from late October to April/May every year. Never a problem. Plug it in and forget it.
