If a 440 needs 3.55s for hills you must have a puny, almost dead 440, you need a tune up or something, my 360 pulls up the going to the sun road in glacier national park in 3rd like no ones buisness,
MEGGA dittos to that 440 being almost "dead".
I have a REringed 440 in my 62 with a 509 cam, iron mans AND a 2.76 gear ... nothing trix.
I can start that car off in THIRD GEAR at a stop light and it will pull half-way decent.
It is a BLAST driving that car with that gear. REMEMBER what the cop said in that Monaco from the movie "CrAzY Mary" ?

My friend back in the 80s had a 2.76 SG in a 4 speed 383 Charger... He went through clutches like crazy.
Too heavy a car... I had a 2.76 for a little while in my 4-speed 383 Valiant. 1st would pull hard to 55, 2nd to 85, 3rd to 110 and I never had the courage to find out how fast 4th would go
I eventually swapped it for a 3.23 which was a good compromise between freeway flying and off-the-line.
