8-3/4 2.76 suregrip not that uncommon around here. I've had a couple through the years. A kid I work with a number of years ago picked up a 72 Chrysler Newport to use for enduro racing. I helped him with the drivetrain, it had a 2.76 suregrip. I told him to leave it in low the entire race. Worked pretty well too. Dave

I've got a 741 case 2.76 SG (power lok) sitting in a five gallon bucket in my garage. Ran it in my Challenger last year for the Power Tour. Keep it around just for that purpose. You can only imagine the top end on a 440 Six Pack Challenger running 2.76s.

BTW, short gears ARE numerically higher ratios, just like low gear in your transmission is numerically higher.

As wierd as it may be to some people, the tall gears WITH a sure grip offer the driver freeway economy and traction in the snow. Then again, I live in California. I dont see much snow anyway.

FRANKENberri ... Yes - you are WEIRD !! .... a 2.76 gear is a very SHORT gear ...not TALL.

Do I have to learn you EVERYthing ? ..

no, tall or high gearing is numerically low...less mechanical advantage, more speed per RPM

short or low gearing is numerically high, with more mechanical advantage, but less speed per RPM.

if this is for a cruiser, a 2.76 limited slip, with a good higher stall (say, 3500RPM) but "tight" (not a lot of slip at part throttle) works very well, giving decent highway RPM, and plenty of torque for launching and accelerating.

stall speed is where you get maximum torque multiplication....the closer you get to your peak torque RPM, the more the multiplication to get the car moving. the taller gears make it sane to drive at reasonable highway speeds. my 5th ave, with 3.55's and 27" tall tires with 3.55's and a lockup 904 buzzed at 3300 RPM on the freeway here in MI (75mph). was very fatiguing to drive more than about 20 miles. a 2.76 drops it to a more reasonable 2550 RPM.

also, higher (lower numerically) gears are stronger, because the ring gear teeth are larger.

My friend back in the 80s had a 2.76 SG in a 4 speed 383 Charger... He went through clutches like crazy.

I have a 2.76 sg in my 440 daily driven short bed, I want 3.55 for all the hills around here.

I've heard ov a few, but haven't seen one yet. I'd LOVE to find a 742 or 489 2.76 SG for my Challenger... Might save me $3000...

I'm probably just gonna end up putting 2.76's in an SG where some real gears were instead...

Might it be a 2.94? I've never heard of a 2.76 gear having the SG.

I used to see that ratio on C bodies, fairly common in the '60's and early '70's, actually Dads '70 Newport w/383 had that combination,

I pulled my 2.76 SG chunk from a c-body rear. I love it with the 360 in the cuda

If a 440 needs 3.55s for hills you must have a puny, almost dead 440, you need a tune up or something, my 360 pulls up the going to the sun road in glacier national park in 3rd like no ones buisness, very steep and fairly high elevation, breath takeing road.

Its just all straight up and down around here. Got plenty of power just wanting to improve my mpg a little. You know big cam, stall, tall intake, plus the 2.76 gears sucks in the hills. Put the engine in a more usable rpm range, if I was a freeway flyer they would be great.
