Easy to do once intermediate shaft is removed from under the distributor. 5/16" hex shaft in a long section goes straight down into oil pump, gets turned counter-clockwise with decent drill.

You can easily pre-oil your motor with a pre-oil tool and a good HD reversible drill. The procedure is to remove the distributor and the oil pump drive. Insert the pre-oil shaft down into the motor and engage it into your oil pump. Connect your drill to the shaft and run your drill in reverse (run the drill forward for a small block) to pre-oil the motor. As a warning, make sure that you have either a guage or a block-off hooked up at the rear of the block (1/4" pipe threads where you normally connect the oil pressure sending unit) or when you pre-oil the motor, oil will shoot out of that hole all over.

Here is a link to the pre-oil tool:

the shaft just pulls out. you might want to mark on the gears where they lined up so you'll get it back in the right place when you're done. it makes life alot easier!

b 4 you start turn the crank to TDC on the timing marks w the rotor under #6 so the passages will b lined up to oil the pass head. Use 2 pieces of straightened coat hangar w a little L bend on the end to lift the inter gear up but b 4 you do if you are comfortable w the plug wire routing/rotor/inter gear clocking note the orientation of the slot so you can return it to that position w you are all done w both heads (w the crank turned back 1/4 turn CCW from the 1&1/4 CW turns from the 2nd preoiling). Then preoil it till you get pressure then stop & turn the crank 1&1/4 turns CW & repeat to oil the dr head. EDIT might use Andy's tip of starting w a speed handle to make sure the pump is free/not binding. When done if the intergear will not seat all the way may need to (re)pull it & w the primer rod turn the hex on the pump slightly so the intergear hex end will fit. MORE EDIT. going back 1/4 turn (from (1&1/4) set the dist in so the rotor is under #1 wire

Make sure you have a good drill.I use an old 1/2 inch one.It still loads down when the pressure builds. When I did my 440 I had the V covers off.Big mistake as I had about a quart of oil on the floor real quick. Now I use an old set that the centers are cut out of.Rocky

If this is an engine that has been run before, I wouldn't worry about it.
