Getting into the assembly phase of my small block stroker. There is some light rust in the lifter bores that I need to remove. What's the best method to clean these out? Can't seem to find a wire brush that will fit the bore. Maybe a scouring attachment for my dremel?

Yes, I'll definitely make sure the lifters spin freely before I assemble.

A 10 gauge shotgun brush might work if you can find one.
10 gauge is .77 bore (much smaller than the .904 lifter bore but they are over size brushes in order to scour the bore.
Might be large enough if the rust is VERY light.

Okay. Next question.

Looks like O'Reilly stocks a 7/8". I'm guessing that size will work.

Next size up is a 1" which would be a bit over size.

You want it slightly oversize so the wires supporting the berries deflect a little... With a small hone you won't get even pressure... 15/16 would be ideal & they do/did make them, I have one from back in the 80's... But a 1" will work just don't do more than a couple passes with it.. Use light oil & expect to be cleaning the block again...

Unlike piston rings that need a perfect bore to seal, lifters only need a clean bore to ride in. That said, just give them a couple passes to get rid of surface rust. Any deep pits will not affect the lifter. The last thing you want to do is make the bores bigger!

Try a copper tubing wire brush. They make a few sizes and I think there is one size that works pretty well. They are $3.00 at the local hardware store. Cut off the handle end and chuck it up in your cordless if you like.

I haven't searched really aggressively, but from what I've found, they seem to jump from 7/8" to 1" with nothing in between. Some places jump from 7/8" to 1 1/4". It would seem to me that you'd want just a little interference to truly hone. That said, for removing rust, 7/8" is probably the way to go.

I used the "safest rust remover" to clean up a machined block that I left for too long. Works great to remove the rust then a light clean up with the hone.

lets see ...

7/8 = 0.875

chrysler lifter bore = 0.904

1" = 1.00

I've run a small 3 leg brake cylinder hone in a lifter bore just to remove any high spots after having a block shotpeened with no ill affects .

Little buggers are proving to be quite elusive. Can't seem to find any store in town that has one in stock.

Harbor Freight has a three stone job in stock (cheap too):

Go with the HF 3-stone job but just do one quick pass down, up and out. Those things take off a lot of material

I found a set of brushes at Harbor Freight that did the trick.

I'm not condoning it's use just saying it could be done if you are real careful.

What I was trying to point out to the OP was that trying to clean a .904 bore with a .875 hone is going to be futile .

It's all moot now. The 1" steel brush from HF with a little PB Blaster cleaned the up real nice.
